Mary Inez Turvey

Zebulon

Mary Inez Turvey, 87, of Zebulon passed away Thursday morning, December 14, 2017, at Zebulon House. She was born in Wake County to the late Dubie Council and Lena Gray Laganis Council.

Mrs. Turvey was a Certified Nursing Assistant for many years having served the residents of Beddingfield Nursing Home in Wake Forest and later serving individuals in their homes. She was a loving mother, mother-in-law (Mama Mary), grandmother and great-grandmother and will be greatly missed.

Funeral services were held at 11 o’clock Monday morning, December 18, 2017, at Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Montlawn Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family immediately following the service.

Mrs. Turvey is survived by her children, Patricia Hocutt of Wake Forest and Reno Eddins and wife, Donna, of Zebulon; grandchildren, Frankie Hocutt, Michael Hocutt and wife, Sheila, Darren Eddins and Denise Six; great-grandchildren, Lauryn Hocutt, Leslie Hocutt, Ashley Hocutt, Brett Hocutt, Gavin Six, Taylor Six and Paige Eddins: and dear friend, Jerry Strickland. She was preceded in death by her brothers, David and Tommy Council, and son-in-law, Randy Hocutt.

James ‘Jim’  Eaves Underwood

Youngsville

James “Jim” Eaves Underwood, 88, of Youngsville passed away on Wednesday evening, December 13, 2017, at Rex Hospital. He was born in Charlotte, the son of the late Ruby Eaves Underwood and Jack J. Underwood. Mr. Underwood was also preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Green Underwood, and a brother; Perrin Underwood.

Mr. Underwood led a life of service to others. He was a long time mayor of Youngsville and a life time member of the Lions Club. He was a former scout master for the Boy Scouts, a deacon in the Youngsville Baptist Church and a long time volunteer with Meals on Wheels. An avid woodworker and electrician, he was always willing to lend a hand to support the community.

Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon, December 17, 2017, in the Youngsville Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Youngsville Cemetery.

Mr. Underwood is survived by his children, Rob Underwood and wife, Charlotte, of Indialantic, Florida, Greg Underwood and wife, Sally, of Charlotte, and Cora U. Lee and husband, Jim, of West Chester, Ohio; grandchildren, James Underwood, Robert Underwood, Cora Katherine Lee Jones and husband, Torin, Parker Lee and Elizabeth Underwood.

Peggy Dickson Marsh

Washington, N.C.

Mrs. Margaret “Peggy” McDowell Dickson Marsh, 77, a resident of Washington, N.C. died Wednesday, November 22, 2017, at Vidant Medical Center.

A memorial service officiated by Pastor Harold Woodlief was held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, December 16, 2017, at Bright Funeral Home.  Burial followed in Wake Forest Cemetery.

Peggy Marsh was born in Washington D.C. on September 21, 1940, the daughter of Waverly Dickson and Margaret Dickson. She attended Mt. Vernon Seminary, Mary Baldwin College, Katherine Gibbs Boston Secretarial School, Lewis & Clark College – Nursing.

On June 23, 1961 she married Colonel Samuel Marsh and set out on an eclectic career where she held positions of increasing importance. Being a fastidious homemaker (so much dirt, so little time) she truly enjoyed her first job at MUDCAT scheduling cleaning of industrial pollution spills and abatement ponds. Her other positions were Executive Secretary Metrocable Engineering/ Secretary Technical Intelligence Team, Defense Intelligence Agency/ Technical Aide and Senior Secretary Intelligence Planning Staff, MITRE Corp/ Corporate Security Officer, Director Employee Health Plan, and Secretary to President, RBI/ Church Secretary Trinity Presbyterian Church/ Legal Secretary and Office Manager, Law Offices of John T. Donelan.

The position Peggy enjoyed and took the most pride in was personal aide to Colonel Trevor Dupuy, the renowned author and military researcher.

Despite her work schedule Peggy pursued volunteer work in mentoring abused and neglected children, tutored children in reading, and was responsible for establishing volunteer programs for tutoring children to read in two school districts.

Of all her awards Peggy took the most pride in a small trophy presented her as a young girl by Miss Rueland, the owner of Camp Robin Hood. Miss Rueland was a major influence in Peggy’s life and helped instill in her a confidence and an unshakeable sense of duty that would come to hold tight together Peggy’s future family when jobs were lost and the future bleak.

Surviving with Peggy’s husband of 56 years are two children, Samuel W. Marsh IV and Waverly D. Marsh; a sister, Beverly Dickson Spitzer; three nieces, Catherine Spitzer, Margaret Elliot, Renee Gaunt; and two nephews, David Spitzer and Todd Spitzer. A sister, Anne Dickson Ravenel, and a nephew, Ian Spitzer, predecease her.

Dorothy Crabtree Strickland

Raleigh

Dorothy Crabtree Strickland, 92, passed away Monday morning, December 18, 2017, at her residence. She was born in Harnett County, the daughter of the late Sarah Barham Crabtree and Thomas A. Crabtree. She was preceded in death by her husband, Zeb Vernon Strickland.

Mrs. Strickland had owned and operated with her husband D & Z Associates, an auto parts sales company, for 30-plus years. She was a member of the Falls Baptist Church.

A funeral service will be held at 1 o’clock Thursday afternoon, December 21, 2017, in the Falls Baptist Church with Dr. Tom Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Falls Community Cemetery.

Mrs. Strickland is survived by her daughter, Sandra S. Ray and husband, Johnny, of Raleigh; a sister, Estelle Flowers and husband, Richard, of Baltimore, Maryland; sisters-in-law, Shirley Tart and Mavis Strickland, both of Raleigh; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Irene Kate Apps

Wake Forest

Irene Kate Apps, 96, died Sunday, December 17, 2017. She was born in England on September 24, 1921 to the late Robert John Camfield and Kate Louise Clark Camfield. Mrs. Apps worked for over 20 years as a cafeteria worker in New York.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, John William Apps; a son, Brian Apps; a grandson, Kris Bogert; and three sisters and a brother.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 21, 2017, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home, Wake Forest. Burial will take place in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida at a later date.

Surviving are a daughter, Cheryl Terry and husband, Bruce, of Wake Forest; a son, Charlie Apps and wife, Audrey of Virginia; ten grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and two grea- great-grandchildren.

Edward A. Gove

Wake Forest

Master Sergeant Edward A. Gove, 83, died peacefully on December 16, 2017. A veteran of the Vietnam Conflict and the Cuban Missile Crisis, he was awarded two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star.

MSgt. Gove was born on November 16, 1934 in Brandon, Vermont to George and Helen Gove. In 1952, he joined the armed forces and was assigned to Mildenhall in England. It was here that he met the love of his life, Rose Ann Mitchell. They were married on November 6, 1954.

MSgt. Gove was discharged with full honors in 1974 and settled in Plattsburgh, New York.  He then continued his career by owning his own television repair business and becoming an electrician. MSgt. Gove continued to work until May 2015 when he relocated to Wake Forest, NC.

MSgt. Gove was a brave and loyal soldier, as well as a patient and loving father. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rose; his son, Robert, and daughter-in-law, Laurie, of Las Vegas; his daughter, Marie, of Wappinger Falls, New York and his daughter, Linda, of Wake Forest.  MSgt. Gove is also survived by four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, December 22, 2017, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home, Wake Forest. Rev. Harold Woodlief will officiate.

He was a passionate golfer and bridge player. MSgt. Gove achieved the status of Life Master in bridge.  He was also an avid square dancer and provided a rescue to feral cats. MSgt. Gove also competed in the New York State senior games. In addition, he was a commander for the local Power Squadron in Plattsburgh.
