You could help create a high-quality public transport system

Got an interest in public transit? An opinion about rail? An idea about connecting the Triangle in ways that increase mobility for the underserved?

GoTriangle is creating a Transit Citizen Advisory Committee to help keep its Board of Trustees informed about community issues associated with providing a high-quality transit network that serves the needs of our entire region.

Those interested in serving on the committee have until Monday, Dec. 18, to apply. Applications are available for download on the Town’s website at www.wakeforestnc.gov/transportation.aspx under “Go Triangle.”

Now that voters in Orange, Durham and Wake counties have approved half-cent sales taxes dedicated to transit improvements, plans for a light-rail system, a commuter rail line and a vast network of interconnected bus service are rolling along. GoTriangle wants to make sure it hears a variety of voices as planning proceeds.

Committee members will:

  • Provide advice and feedback to the board during planning for public transportation systems.
  • Offer views of constituent groups.
  • Suggest how transit can assist with equity issues, such as homelessness, affordable housing, economic opportunity and living with disabilities.
  • Provide information regarding the customer experience of transit riders.
  • Communicate stakeholder opinions, attitudes and needs to the board, identify areas of concern and recommend changes.

Committee members will not have authority to create or enforce policy or rules, but their analysis and recommendations will be welcome.

The GoTriangle Board of Trustees will appoint 30 people to the committee, with 14 from Wake County, nine from Durham and seven from Orange. The Wake County Board of Commissioners will have the opportunity to recommend six of the county’s 14 members, the Durham County Board of Commissioners will recommend five and the Orange County Board of Commissioners four. GoTriangle will select 15 additional members.

Anyone interested in serving should send a letter of interest along with resume and application to one of these locations or email addresses:

  • GoTriangle Board of Trustees, c/o Shelley Blake, GoTriangle General Counsel, PO Box 13787, Research Triangle Park, NC 27709 or sblake@gotriangle.org
