The Wake Forest Human Relations Council has announced several exciting changes to this year’s Good Neighbor Day, including a new day, new location and free shuttle service.
Good Neighbor Day is an annual celebration that assembles Wake Forest residents from all walks of life for a day of food, fun, and family entertainment. By bringing together a mix of cultures, music, ages and ethnicities, the event celebrates diversity and promotes goodwill among all of Wake Forest’s citizens.
For the past 11 years, the HRC has offered the popular community event on the third Sunday in September at Holding Park. This year, in an effort to encourage even greater participation by area residents, Good Neighbor Day will be on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 1 to 4 p.m. at E. Carroll Joyner Park on Harris Road.
In addition to the new day and location will be the introduction of free shuttle service, courtesy of the Banks Kerr Family YMCA. This year visitors can hop on a YMCA bus along Taylor Street – behind the Wake Forest Town Hall – for the short trip to Joyner Park. The free shuttle will depart from Taylor Street to Joyner Park at 12:45 p.m., 1:45 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. and depart from Joyner Park back to Town Hall at 2:15 p.m., 3:15 p.m. and 3:45 p.m.
One thing that has not changed about Good Neighbor Day will be the presentation of the Good Neighbor of the Year Award. Mayor Vivian Jones will present the honor to one local youth and one adult who consistently demonstrate an unfailing commitment to preserving, maintaining, and improving the quality of life in their neighborhood and community.
Nearly 4,000 Wake Forest-area residents have participated in Good Neighbor Day since its inception in 2006. Offering food, dancing, local musicians, a DJ, face painting, prizes, and recreational activities for both children and adults, this family-oriented celebration promises something for everyone.
The HRC encourages diversity and promotes goodwill among all citizens of Wake Forest. Good Neighbor Day serves as a catalyst for carrying out the town’s vision of “building a community populated by diverse groups whose common bond is a love of our town.”
In the event of rain, Good Neighbor Day may be rescheduled for Saturday, Sept. 23. Weather-related updates will be available by calling the Wake Forest Weather Line at 919-435-9569.
