About 400 adult skaters with their coaches and families are in Wake Forest this week, participating in the 2017 U.S. Adult Figure Skating Championships at the Polar Ice House in The Factory on South Main Street.
The event, hosted by the Triangle Figure Skating Club, began Tuesday and lasts through Saturday so there is still time to see some wonderful skating in person. Tickets begin at $20 per day and are available at the Polar Ice House box office.
According to U.S. Figure skating, the national governing body for the sport, competitors at the U.S. Adult Championships are divided into five age groups (21-35, 36-45, 46-55, 56-65, 66+) and two tracks (masters and adults). Events are held in singles, pairs and ice dance, and in dramatic and light entertainment. Athletes qualify for championship events by placing in the top four at one of three sectional championships held earlier this year.
This year’s championship events feature three-time reigning U.S. championship adult ice dance champions Shay Sterlace and Yovanny Durango, reigning U.S. championship masters junior-senior ladies champion Regan Alsup, reigning U.S. championship masters junior-senior men’s champion Daniel Palmeri and reigning U.S. championship masters pairs champions Kimberly Sailer and David Garber.
