Here’s a mystery. What is a Scam Jam Event? That is what will happen on Thursday, May 18, at the Renaissance Centre on Brooks Street. It will be hosted by Resources for Seniors – the Northern Wake Senior Center, Triangle Family Services, the Renaissance Centre and the Town of Wake Forest. You will get more information and the opportunity to register for the event soon.
The Wake County Senior Games and Silver Arts will be held from Monday, March 27, through Sunday, April 28, and you can pick up a registration packet at the Northern Wake Senior Center.
Senior center members are encouraged to support the center’s own Carolina Steppers Line Dancers who will be performing in the Silver Follies at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, in the Garner Performing Arts Center.
Want to be an advocate and have your voice heard? Then on Friday, March 31, at 10:30 a.m. join Mary Bethel, president of the N.C. Coalition on Aging, for a presentation with time afterward for questions and answers.
Milton’s Pizza & Pasta in Wakefield will host a special night on Tuesday, April 4, from 4 to 10 p.m. where 10 to 20 percent of the sales will benefit the Northern Wake Senior Center. This special fund-raising was arranged by the Friends of the Northern Wake Senior Center. Bring all your family and friends. You can eat in or take out.
Remember there is free tax aid thanks to AARP on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. until April 12. Call the front office to set up an appointment.
Also, because of the AARP Tax Assistance in the fitness room, the Wednesday Zumba class will be held in the Community Center at Flaherty Park on North White Street in February, March and April.
Whether you are new or an old hand at the senior center, you should check the calendar regularly because of all the offerings which change with each season.
The free health screenings and blood pressure checks are provided at 9:30 each Monday by a variety of local businesses, which are the Franklin Manor, Stay at Home Senior Care and Dr. Casey Baldwin, a pharmacist.
Please see the front office and materials there for all the counseling and assistance programs offered through the senior center. There is one-on-one counseling about eligibility and services for older adults and people with disabilities; there is similar counseling for financial care assistance; and a veterans representative is at the center on the second Wednesday. There will be a Medicaid counselor on site beginning in July and there will also be a workshop about Medicaid.
The Northern Wake Senior Center at 235 East Holding Avenue is owned by the Town of Wake Forest with programming and staffing provide by Resources for Seniors. Most programs are free for all.
