A Parkinson’s support group is a new program at the center, and the next meeting will be Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 1 p.m. This is sponsored by both the Northern Wake Senior Center-Resources for Seniors and the Wake County Northern Regional Center across East Holding Avenue from the center. The Parkinson’s support group will meet on Oct. 5 at the Northern Regional Center, on Nov. 2 at the Northern Wake Senior Center because of early voting at the Northern Regional Center, and on Dec. 7 at the Northern Regional Center. The meeting time will always be 1 p.m.
Also, the ongoing caregiver and grief support group hosted by Heartland Hospice at the senior center will meet Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 2:30 p.m.
A new legal aid one-on-one counseling program will be at the center from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, Sept. 29. Appointments are required and limited; call the center for information at 919-544-4111.
An overview of the Medicare options will be provided by Jason Burgess Senior Plan Advisors at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11. There will be refreshments. Sign up at the front desk.
If you are new or an old hand at the senior center, you should check the calendar regularly because of all the offerings, from a birthday party to a storytelling group to a theater group.
The free health screenings and blood pressure checks are provided at 9:30 each Monday by a variety of local businesses, which are the Franklin Manor, Stay at Home Senior Care and Dr. Casey Baldwin, a pharmacist.
Please see the front office and materials there for all the counseling and assistance programs offered through the senior center. There is one-on-one counseling about eligibility and services for older adults and people with disabilities; there is similar counseling for financial care assistance; and a veterans representative is at the center on the second Wednesday. There will be a Medicaid counselor on site beginning in July and there will also be a workshop about Medicaid.
There are new classes in Tai Chi for Arthritis, a creative writing class, beginner line dance class, and an adaptive yoga class. Check the schedules for the times for each.
The Northern Wake Senior Center at 235 East Holding Avenue is owned by the Town of Wake Forest with programming and staffing provide by Resources for Seniors. Most programs are free for all.
