Larry Paul Elliott, M.D.

Wake Forest

Larry Paul Elliott, M.D., 84, of Wake Forest passed away Tuesday evening, September 20, 2016, at his home. He was born on October 16, 1931, in Lawrence, Kansas, to the late Leonard Paul Elliott and Mary Elizabeth Myers Elliott.

Dr. Elliott attended the University of Florida and was a member of the Florida Fighting Gators football team. He went on to attend medical school at the University of Tennessee. After further education at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Washington University in St. Louis, and the University of Florida Medical School in Gainesville, Florida, Dr. Elliott’s specialty was cardio vascular radiology. He eventually became one of the preeminent experts in this field. Dr. Elliott ended his career as the chairman of the Department of Radiology at the Georgetown University Medical School.

Dr. Elliott’s passions were his family, education, and sports. He is remembered as a father active in and passionate about the lives and activities of his children and grandchildren, especially as it pertained to their education and sports. If he didn’t know how to do something, he would read, do research, and learn from others who had knowledge to share. The best example of this is his immersion into the equestrian sport while residing in Micanopy, Florida. He became an expert in horse care and fostered the love of the sport in his young daughters. He eventually founded the first Pony Club in the state of Florida. He became equally knowledgeable about and involved in cross-country running with his son. In his later life, he attended many football, baseball, basketball, and soccer games to cheer on and support his five grandchildren. He was forever a loud and passionate Florida Gators fan. He also enjoyed designing and caring for the yard and garden at their home on the Isle of Palms. Most of all, he loved his dear wife, Betty Lou, for sixty years.

A private graveside service was held at Pine Forest Memorial Gardens in Wake Forest.
Dr. Elliott is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Lou Hawkins Elliott; children, Laurie Lou Elliott and husband, Mark, of Atlanta, Georgia, Mary Beth Loyd and husband, Jimmy, of Wake Forest, and Larry Paul Elliott Jr. and Joshua Duncan Maclean Wiggin of Washington, D.C.; grandchildren, Mark Lee Elliott Jr., Megan Lenora Elliott Long and husband, Brandon Michael Long, Samuel Brock Elliott, Philip Reid Elliott and Natalie James Loyd; sister, Leanne Elliott Penick and husband, Tom, of Clearwater, Florida; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Transitions LifeCare, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607 or to SPCA of Wake County, 200 Petfinder Lane, Raleigh, NC 27603.
