Board to settle Owen dispute

During its regular meeting Tuesday, Sept. 20, the Wake Forest Town Board will consider approving a settlement they and their attorney, Eric Vernon, have reached with Bob Johnson, the owner of several downtown properties who said he had deeds showing he owned some or all of the small space between The Cotton Company block and B&W Hardware on South White Street.

The town has said the space directly across from the one-block East Owen Avenue is an extension of that street and acted on that by paving and beautifying it during the South White Streetscape project. Johnson went to court with his claim, but it now being settled after a long series of negotiations.

The board is also planning to purchase a 3.46-acre wooded tract at 610 Brooks Street owned by Ricky and Jane Wright and James and Carol Warren that is adjacent to the Northern Wake Senior Center on East Holding Avenue and wraps around the center site on the north and west. The land, valued at $453,661 on the Wake County Department of Revenue website, will be used for parking during and after the planned expansion at the center.

The commissioners will also approve the paperwork to establish the Wake Forest Business and Industry Partnership. The descriptions of the agenda items were not available before press time on Wednesday.

Another item is the settlement for right-of-way disputes for the new extension of Ligon Mill Road which is almost complete. It runs from the former end of Ligon Mill at its intersection with Caveness Farms Avenue northward toward but not reaching the N.C. 98 Bypass and provides access to future lots in the Reynolds Mill subdivision.

At the close of the meeting the board will meet with Vernon for a briefing about the right-of-way easements needed to complete the Stadium Drive Complete Streets Project.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the second-floor meeting chamber. Those with hearing problems can ask for a hearing aid before the meeting; the acoustics in the room are poor.

If you want to speak to the commissioners and mayor on a topic not included in the agenda you should contact Town Clerk Deeda Harris by 3 p.m. the day of the meeting.
