Lots going on at the market

One of the busiest places every Saturday morning is the Wake Forest Farmers Market, which now is open from 8 a.m. to noon in the Renaissance Plaza parking lot on Brooks Street, and this Saturday there are events for everyone in addition to all the food.

Chef Silvana Rangel-Dupree from Soul Cocina will demonstrate imaginative vegan cuisine beginning at 9:30 a.m. There will be beautiful vegetable bouquets that can be broken down into a delicious side dish, and a demonstration of making collard wraps. Try the tamales and learn to incorporate local ingredients into a food flavored with her rich Colombian heritage.

Soul Cocina is a catering, personal chef and meal delivery service for the Triangle – Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill – and you can see more at www.soulcocinatriangle.com.

Under other tents, the North Carolina State Extension Master Gardeners will be showing children how to paint leaves on T-shirts, and performers with the story-telling festival at the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre will provide 15-minute story times for everyone. The leaf painting begins at 9 a.m. and the story telling starts at 10:30 a.m.

As for the food, the variety is a bit overwhelming. There are now two vendors selling fish, shrimp and scallops fresh from the coast. You can purchase bouquets of fresh flowers and wreaths of dried flowers. There are baked goods galore, from filled brioche through gluten-free cookies and cakes. There is yard art and pottery for your kitchen and other rooms. Honey, yes indeed, and bee/honey products. Have you tried sweet potato greens? Do you need fresh chicken or rabbit? Want to try some handmade soaps and lotions?

See a list of all the vendors and their offerings at www.wakeforestfarmersmarket.org as well as upcoming events.
