The cause of the fire that consumed the Cullom house on North Main Street the night of March 25-26 will probably never be known. Wake Forest Police Chief Jeff Leonard replied to this week’s query about his department’s investigation into the cause by saying, via Public Information Officer Bill Crabtree, “The case has been closed. All leads have been exhausted.”

When the large subdivision Tryon was approved last June the developer, Tryon WF LLC headquartered in Knightdale, did not have a plan to provide sewer service to the southern part of the large tract along Copper Beech Lane. Well, that is inaccurate. The developer had a plan – attach to a City of Raleigh sewer line by extending one in or near the Bowling Green subdivision and building the extension across several private properties south and north of Wait Avenue. That extension could serve not only Tryon but also a large undeveloped or lightly developed swath of land extending east to and beyond Averette Road.
Last June the affected property owners north of Wait Avenue had agreed to easements across their properties but two adjoining land owners south of the road, Tony Gordon and Bob Cooper, were resisting and refusing to agree to easements and condemnation was a possibility.
No more. This week Gordon said the two have reached an agreement with the city and the sewer line will be built to service Tryon and beyond.

Pothole? Thanks, we have a lot of our own – and one on Wingate b between Durham Road and Stadium Drive/North Avenue was a spine-jarring, tire-slicing wonder. We called on Public Works Director Mike Barton who said that is a state-maintained road and told the Gazette to call a Department of Transportation number, but the operator there could not take the complaint. Instead, she sent us on to another number – 919-496-2277 – which will be the starting point from now on if it is a state street. Miraculously, the same day I called the number the pothole was filled by noon – and so were several other holes in Wingate and North Avenue. Surely there were others who had called days earlier, leading to the action, but it was still heart-warming to see such quick action.

A while back the Gazette listed all the new stores for Wake Forest Crossing shopping center on Capital Boulevard and now there is a new business – Orange Theory Fitness – to add to the list.
Brian Mountcastle with Weingarten Realty also said the weather slowed down the construction earlier this year – they were not alone – “but we are making up time. Tenants plan on starting to open in June.”
The current new stores opening, aside from the one above, are Kirklands, Petco, TJ Maxx, Michael’s, Ross, East Coast Wings & Grill, Envy Nail Salon, Massage Envy and Mattress Firm. We will ask again soon for any further businesses signing leases.
