Smithsonian comes to Wake Forest

The traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution, Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America, arrived in Wake Forest on Thursday, April 9, and the staff and volunteers at the Wake Forest Historical Museum set to work to unpack the 25 wheeled crates each weighing about 275 pounds.

It will be all set up and ready for visitors when the museum doors open this Friday, April 17, for the six weeks the exhibit will be in town.

The exhibit is free and the museum will be open every day for the rest of April and through May except for Memorial Day. The hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, and 2 to 5 p.m. Sundays. The museum is at 414 North Main Street with parking along the streets on three sides and in the rear of the museum building, which is behind the historic Calvin Jones House.

All parts of the museum will be open so make sure you look through the exhibit hall with its large collection of college sports memorabilia.

On Sunday, May 3, at 3 p.m. Scott Mason, known widely as The Tarheel Traveler, will speak at the museum.

Thanks to a grant from the North Carolina Humanities Council, Mr. Mason will speak on North Carolina Sports Legends. The program is free and open to the public, but seating is limited so early arrival is recommended.

The Wake Forest Historical Association will be providing refreshments following the program.
