The construction permit for the Wake Forest Fire Department’s Station #4 on Jenkins Road, which had been waiting since Dec. 12, 2014, was pulled during March by Focus Design Builders, but construction has not begun.
The building will have 9,547 square feet, the fees totaled $35,111.99, and the improvement value will be $1,786,547.
Altogether the independent fire department owns property – according to the Wake County Revenue Department’s website – worth $4,630,022. They are: Station #1 on Elm Avenue, $1,713,359; Station #2 on Ligon Mill Road, $1,110,156; and Station #3 on Forestville Road, $1,800,507. Wake County currently lists the land on Jenkins Road as worth $104,440. Station #5 is the former Falls Fire Department, which merged with the Wake Forest department in March of 2012. The building housing the department stands on Holmes Hollow Road – previously Falls of the Neuse Road before the road was realigned and rebuilt – and was built by and is still owned by the Falls of Neuse Community Club and also serves as the community building. Its value is listed by the county as $289,490.
The builder for Station #4 has a strong tie to the department. One of Focus Design Builders founders is David Williams, who became a volunteer with the Wake Forest Fire Department as soon as he could. After Chief Jimmy B. Keith, the first fulltime paid chief, died in 2004, Williams was selected as chief and served for two years. He is part of a select group. There have only been 12 chiefs since the Wake Forest Fire Department was organized in 1921 with Thomas Arrington Sr. as the chief.
The current chief, Ron Early, said the preparations for the staffing and equipment are well underway. “The training is going well. We have 10 men and one woman in the recruit school. They are still running and training throughout the town, and they should be done around the first of July.
“We had already placed the order for the new engine, and it should arrive around September. It is a Rosenbauer and the cost is approximately $463,000.”
Early also said the department anticipates it can hold the grand opening for Station #4 in September. “We want to make sure we have everything in place before we do it.”
The only other commercial construction permit was issued to Zachery Michael Inc. to build a summerhouse on Sugar Gap Road which is a private road for the Bexley Apartments, which stand at the corner of Rogers and Heritage Lake roads. The building will have 434 square feet, add $115,000 of value to the property and the builder paid $1,981.67 in fees.
The 40 new homes will be in the form of nine townhouses and 31 single-family houses. Wilson Parker Homes of Raleigh is building the townhouses which will be from 401 through 419 Retreat Lane in Traditions. The total in fee was $41,424 and each townhouse will have an improvement value of $85,000.
