Have fun at National Night Out Sept. 17

The Town of Wake Forest will host Downtown Plan Update Open House sessions at the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre, 405 S. Brooks St., Tuesday, Sept. 17, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and Wednesday, Sept.18, from 6-8 p.m.

Both drop-in sessions will give community members the opportunity to provide feedback on the draft Downtown Plan. Both sessions will have an informal, open house-style format, along with the same content, so community members may drop in anytime to view displays, ask questions, and share comments. No formal presentation will be given.

Scheduled for adoption later this year, the updated Wake Forest Downtown Plan will provide recommendations and serve as a guide for future land use and development, transportation and parking, pedestrian mobility, redevelopment opportunities, and streetscape improvements throughout Downtown Wake Forest. The event is scheduled from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Joyner Park Community Center, 701 Harris Road.

NNO promises something for everyone, including a DJ, games, food, special prize drawings, and fire, police, and EMS vehicle displays, along with a variety of booths highlighting crime prevention and safety.

Wake Forest Police officers will be on hand distributing information on topics such as vehicle security, home security, and personal safety. The police department will also offer a K-9 demonstration, D.A.R.E. presentation, and information on Neighborhood Watch, Special Olympics, and more.

Although NNO is offered nationally on the first Tuesday in August, the WFPD schedules its event each year on the first Monday in October to take advantage of cooler temperatures.

NNO teams law enforcement agencies with citizens, community leaders, civic groups, and local businesses to promote safe, healthy neighborhoods. The NNO observance is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
