Carl William Flick

Raleigh

Carl William Flick died Sunday, August 25 2024, at his home in Raleigh with family members present. He was 96.

He was born to the late Fred J. and the late Mary Grace Flick on November 10, 1927, in Roanoke VA.

Carl graduated from Fieldale High School in Fieldale VA and joined the Army in 1946. He served in the Occupation Forces in northern Italy. Upon his return he entered Lynchburg College and graduated in 1952. He continued his education at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth Texas, earning a Master of Divinity degree. He served churches in Virginia for eleven years.

He joined the Navy as a Chaplain in 1966 and served for twenty-three years. While in the Navy he earned a Master of Theology at Duke University and a Doctor of Ministries at McCormick Seminary.  He retired from the Navy in 1989 with the rank of Captain.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Miriam Annette Mehaffey Flick, a daughter, Kathy Lynn Sears, and a twin brother, Carlos Thomas Flick.

Survivors include his wife of twenty-nine years, Anne Gober Flick, daughters Phyllis Flick Zarko of Manchester NJ and Karen Sue Parsons of Virginia Beach VA, six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Transitions LifeCare, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh NC 27607 or to the charity of one’s choice.

There will be a visitation on Thursday, August 29, 2024 from 5-7 PM at Bright Funeral Home, 405 S. Main St. Wake Forest, NC 27587. On Friday, August 30, there will be a graveside service at Roselawn Cemetery in Martinsville VA at 2 p.m.

A Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, September 14, at 2 p.m. at Hillyer Memorial Christian Church, 718 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh NC.

Lawrence Bailey Marshall

Wake Cross Roads Community

Lawrence Bailey Marshall, 89, of the Wake Cross Roads Community, passed away Wednesday morning, August 28, 2024 at Hillside Nursing Center.

He was born in Wake County, the son of the late John Albert Marshall and Lantie Bailey Marshall and was retired from the NC Department of Transportation.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, August 31, 2024 in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home with Pastor Ron Brisson officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.

Lawrence is survived by his sister, Betty Lou Lockleair and husband, Hutch, of Wake Forest; his brother, Donnie Marshall of Wake Forest; nieces, Tanya Marshall, Linda Lockleair and Deborah Lambert; and nephew, Bert Marshall. In addition to his parentAs, he was preceded in death by his sister, Thaddie Mae Marshall and by his brother, Charles Albert Marshall.

Donald Ray McCorkle

Youngsville

Donald Ray McCorkle, 91, of Youngsville, NC, passed away on Saturday, August 24, 2024.

Don was born in Charlotte, NC on April 9, 1933. He graduated from West Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, NC in 1952 and served in the US Army from 1953-1955, stationed in Germany during the Korean War.

Don first worked at New Idea Farm Equipment and later Rea Construction Company where he transferred from Charlotte to Raleigh in 1979. He retired as a plant manager in 1998 after 25 years at Rea Construction Company.

His hobbies included, surf fishing, square dancing, gardening, wood working, and he was an expert marksman. He was a Mason in Charlotte and a member of Wake Forest Presbyterian Church in Wake Forest, NC.

Don is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Sara Springs McCorkle; Children, Kathy Lynn McCorkle of Youngsville, NC, Douglas Ray McCorkle (Chocajuana) of Wake Forest, NC, and David Kirk McCorkle (Penny Long) of Raleigh, NC, and bonus daughter Julie Gaddy (Lloyd); grandchildren, Obrieana, Graham, Mackenzie, Jackson, Autumn, Jeffrey, and Claudia.

A funeral service was held at 2 PM on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 in the funeral home chapel with Marguerite Sirrine officiating. Burial followed at Pine Forest Memorial Gardens in Wake Forest, NC. The family received friends prior to the service from 1-2 PM at Bright Funeral Home, 405 S. Main St. Wake Forest, NC 27587.

Paul Andrew (Andy) Weatherington

Youngsville

Paul Andrew (Andy) Weatherington, age 67, died peacefully in his home after a brief battle with brain cancer.

After graduating from high school in Murphy, NC, Andy moved to Atlanta, GA where he joined the pipefitters union and worked as a journeyman pipefitter until his late twenties. Seeking a career change, he returned to North Carolina and earned a bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University and a master’s degree in computer science and geography from UNC Chapel Hill.

After college, Andy worked as a GIS software designer for Intergraph in Huntsville, AL. He had a long career in Information Systems Technology and retired from Duke Energy.

Andy was an enthusiast of American and Russian history, an avid reader of historical literature, and a member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, Wake Forest, NC at a later date.

Peggy Clark Grady

Raleigh

Peggy Clark Grady passed away August 20, 2024, at Cadence North Raleigh. This was her home for the past two years. She was born in High Point, N.C. on December 9, 1931, to the late Ed and Virginia Perdue Clark.

She is survived by her son Randolph, wife Julaine; son Brian; granddaughter Katherine (James); grandson Marshall (Dakota). Her devoted husband, Bob, of 69 years passed away on October 25, 2020.

Peggy attended and graduated from High Point city schools in 1950. She attended High Point College and graduated from Bryce Commercial College. She married Bob, her high school sweetheart, on September 23, 1951.

Peggy was a stay-at-home mother during Randy and Brian’s younger years. She eventually joined the work force in the financial office of the law firm Maupin, Taylor, and Ellis. She later worked in the financial offices of Hale High School and St. Timothy’s School.

Upon moving to Raleigh in 1967, Bob and Peggy joined Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church. She was a very active member. She served in various roles with special love and interest in the children’s weekday programs and later with the senior adult programs.

The family enjoyed many hobbies together- traveling, camping, boating, games, and raising dogs. Peggy and Bob enjoyed bee keeping and birding. They helped deliver Meals on Wheels and assisted at North Raleigh Ministries. Peggy was very artistic. She enjoyed crafts, painting, and knitting. She knitted caps for babies and cancer patients routinely. Peggy was very dedicated to her family.

A memorial service will be held on August 27, 2024, at 2pm at Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church, 4921 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC, 27609. Since Bob died during the Covid pandemic, this will be a memorial service for both. A reception at the church will follow the service.

Shirley Raymond

Wake Forest

Shirley Raymond passed away peacefully at home in Wake Forest on August 19, 2024. She was born August 5, 1946 in Arcadia, FL, the youngest of Claudius and Anna Walker’s three children.

Shirley was a life-long learner and a fabulous cook who loved to watch K-dramas. Her joy for life was infectious and she always put family first, making sure she tended to the needs of many with a smile on her face and a piece of wisdom to share. She enjoyed making her home a happy, beautiful, and delicious smelling abode. One of her greatest accomplishments was passing along her love of reading to her children and grandchildren so they could teach themselves anything they wanted to learn.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, Bob, her parents, siblings Alan and Claudia, and several other beloved family members.

Funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, Wake Forest, on Monday, August 26th, at 11am with burial immediately following at Wake Forest Cemetery.

She is survived by daughters Lorie (David Speight), and Tricia (Lonni Mahoney), and son Bob (Diane), plus grandchildren: Andrew (Kelsey), Steve, David, and Danny Sanders; Bryce Lanning, Kristen (Nick Romanoski), and Patrick (Anna) Lanning; Grant, Chris, Addison, and Marin Raymond; great-granddaughters Clara Lanning and, arriving soon, Sloane Sanders; step-grandchildren Brian Speight (Michelle), and Harleigh and Cru Mahoney. Also, sisters- and brothers-in-law, multitudinous nieces, nephews and great- nieces and nephews.

Shirley graduated magna cum laude from Alfred I. duPont Jr-Sr High School in Jacksonville, FL early, skipping her senior year, to enroll in the University of South Florida in the fall of 1963 where she met her great love, Bob Raymond.

They eloped and raised a family with her staying home with the children until their youngest was a teenager. She went to travel school and worked as a travel agent for years.

In 1993, Bob and Shirley combined their managerial and travel knowledge to own and operate Uniglobe King Travel from 1993-2006. She loved to travel, traveling internationally as well as visiting most states. Large family reunions around the country were integral to her travel plans.

Shirley was a member of Kiwanis in Avon Lake, OH and Wake Forest, NC, where she enjoyed volunteering at weekly Bingo and was involved in the Key program.

She also loved attending her book club. Her favorite activity was being with family – children’s or grandchildren’s sports, plays, award ceremonies, birthday parties, etc. She was always there for her family to host a delicious meal, bring a dish, baby sit, overnights or dog sit (aka Mimi’s Bed & Barkery), drive to and from the airport and so much more.

Friends visited with the family from 6-8 Sunday evening at Bright Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 405 S. Main St., Wake Forest, NC 27587.

A funeral mass was held at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church on Monday, August 26th, 2024 11:00am Location 520 West Holding Avenue Wake Forest, NC 27587. Burial followed the service in the Wake Forest Cemetery.
