Rebecca Lee ‘Becky’ Fulkerson

Franklinton

Over the past year, with the same courage, determination, and grace demonstrated throughout her life, Rebecca Lee “Becky” Fulkerson navigated pancreatic cancer. She passed away peacefully at home on August 13, 2024 in Franklinton, NC with loving family at her side.

Becky was born in Roundup, MT on December 10, 1959 to Dick and Jeannie Martin, the youngest of six daughters. Becky’s children Angela, Joel, and their families, and her dear husband Paul, were Becky’s greatest loves. She also shared a deep love and affection with the rest of her family and many dear life-long friends near and far.

Becky and Mike Fulkerson divorced before Becky was thirty and the two co-parented well. Angela and Joel could always count on their mom to be a great friend and advocate. The three of them referred to themselves as “Team Fulkerson” knowing they could handle anything together.

Becky had an indomitable spirit, a contagious smile, and a wonderful sense of adventure – there was little she couldn’t do once she put her mind to it. She competed in the National Junior Olympics in the backstroke at age twelve, was the first woman to pass the Billings Firefighter requirements (including the grueling physical tests), and worked her way from part time administrative assistant to GS-14 as a Policy Analyst in the Department of the Interior. As an avid biker and swimmer, she completed numerous triathlons, half and full marathons, 5Ks, and adventure races. Additionally, she completed two Ironman competitions in the U.S. and Mexico after the age of fifty.

Time spent backpacking and fishing in the Beartooth Mountains with her dad and sisters in her youth contributed to Becky’s passion for fishing. It was fishing that first brought Becky and Paul together. Over the past eleven years, they shared great travel and fishing adventures all around the U.S., islands in the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Canada, Cuba and Colombia.  Those trips along with concerts, sporting events, visits with family and friends, holidays, special events and grandkid activities are well-documented in their annual photobooks of Becky and Paul’s commitment to life together.

Having started her career with the Department of the Interior in the mid-80’s, and relocating for several assignments and promotions, ultimately leading her to Washington DC, Becky retired from the Bureau of Reclamation at 58 saying “life’s short live it while you’ve got it”. That was Becky.

The loyalty and dedication of friends and family buoyed Becky’s spirits this past year through memories shared of what her friendship and love has meant to them. This was a gift of her legacy while Becky was alive.

Paul and Angela were Becky’s ceaseless caregivers and companions while Becky’s sister, Patti Iversen and niece Anastasia Young went above and beyond providing care and expertise this past year. The family is immeasurably grateful for their support. All her sisters, along with others, also took turns visiting and sharing in caregiving duties over the last year.

Becky was preceded in death by her dad, Richard “Dick” Martin and her sister Billie Martin Dolph. She is survived by her devoted and loving husband, Paul; children Angela (Wayland) Smedley and Joel (Chanda) Fulkerson and grandsons Hank Fulkerson, and Oliver and Sullivan Smedley; mother Jeannie Martin; sisters Betty (Greg) Laughlin, Patti (Bill) Iversen, Sandy (Bruce) Martin, and Deb Martin Young; numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. The family also wishes to mention the innumerable friends near and far who will remember her legacy.

Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, August 23 at St. Philip Lutheran Church in Raleigh, NC. A reception will immediately follow at Hey Day Brewery. Additionally, a celebration of life will take place in Montana sometime next spring. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Cancer Society.
