(This is the recent press release from FUNGO and Blackbird Brewery.)
Earlier this month, the Wake Forest Board of Commissioners unanimously approved an update to the town’s ordinance regarding alcohol sales at public parks. The ordinance will now include a caveat that legally allows Wake Forest FUNGO to sell alcohol to fans attending home games at Flaherty Park field 2.
A collaboration quickly developed between FUNGO owners, Joe and Julie John, and the owners of Blackbird Brewery, Harmony and Ian VanGundy, both local Wake Forest small businesses, both family-owned, and both dedicated to our community. Now the duo will tout the historic achievements of being the first non-government group allowed to sell and the first beer allowed to be sold at a public park.
Owners Julie John and Harmony VanGundy connected through the Wake Forest Chamber of Commerce. FUNGO has been involved in local athletics for 11 years. The collegiate team is now in its 8th year of play and its first year as the official collegiate summer team of the Town of Wake Forest. Ian and Harmony opened Blackbird Brewery in 2022 after a dozen years of experience in brewing, sales, and distribution.
Wake Forest FUNGO will host this summer’s home opener at Flaherty Park field 2 on June 2. The team is actively seeking partnerships with businesses who will grow with the program. For information on sponsorships please visit www.wakeforestfungo.com
Blackbird Brewery is currently open and ready to serve your family either inside or out on the patio and grass area. It is located off Rogers Branch Road directly across from Heritage High School. For more information check out www.blackbirdbeer.com.

I am glad to see this collaboration between Blackbird Brewery and FUNGO and the town is very forward thinking about making this a great attraction. However, I am a bit confused how on one hand the town supports alcohol in our public parks, and approves it unanimously, yet they are opposed to approving a social district downtown.
