Several local churches and community organizations will honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during a free, public celebration on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2022, at Friendship Chapel Baptist Church, 237 Friendship Chapel Road.
The prelude to the celebration will begin at 6:30 p.m. with three brief videos: How Rosa Parks help start the civil rights movement; The life of a civil rights hero, John Lewis; and rare video of a historic civil rights moment in Alabama in 1965 featuring Dr. King.
The entire program will be both virtual and in person at the church. For those at home, they can watch by accessing this link on Jan. 20: https://www.wakeforestmlkcelebration.com/
The link can also be accessed from the Town of Wake Forest under the News tab for information regarding the MLK Celebration posted on January 5, 2022.
The program will begin at 7 p.m. and the evening’s theme will center around one of Dr. King’s messages: “I have decided to stick to love…Hate is too great a burden to bear.” The featured speaker will be Pastor Donald Warren, pastor at Wake Forest United Methodist Church.
Once again as it has for years, the organizing committee for the event sponsored competitions in creative performance, writing and art competitions for students in Wake Forest and Rolesville-area schools. The competition winners will be recognized during the January 20 program and some will perform.
The committee is accepting monetary donations from the community to help fund the monetary prizes and scholarships awarded to the competition winners. The committee hopes to raise $10,000 by January 31, 2022.
