Senior center this week

Jennie’s Weekly Jots

As we celebrate this week’s Older American’s Hero of the week and Memorial Day there is no one more deserving to honor than Jerry Glenn, who serves on the Advisory Board for the Northern Wake County Senior Center.

Memorial Day is an annual day to honor and remember military personnel who died in service to their country.  The post commander of American Legion Post 187 in Wake Forest, NC. Jerry does just that.  After serving four years in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War he came home as an American Hero, before he started his life as a civilian.  He secured a position with IBM selling soft and hardware and IBM components.  He retired from IBM after 34 years and enjoys sitting on the front porch with an iced tea in his hand when he is sitting still which is not too often.

His life is full of new and interesting twists and turns.  Originally from Chicago, Illinois he is married with children and grandchildren. Jerry and his family lived in Texas when he was transferred to North Carolina. He and his son grow plants, trees and have two koi ponds on their property.  His love of nature is also taken up with gardening.

He is currently editing material for Wake Technical Community College.  Jerry was instrumental in implementing and teaching the computer classes and lectures for both the Northern and Eastern Wake Senior Centers.  He started with three old computers and now, with the help of united Way there is a complete computer lab with the latest technology available.  His passion is educating seniors on the advantages of learning this new technology which as we know is now ever more important.

Jerry began volunteering at the Senior Center several years ago and there has been there ever since.  When the center is open he and his wife Linda are two of the smiling faces you will see and meet.  Chances are you will play cards with one of their groups or take one of his classes.  We are so grateful for his leadership and selfless volunteerism.  He even started our intergenerational “Zoomer” program which is something only a forward thinker would take on .  This program is instrumental to aiding our membership with technology by phone and internet.  Not retired and probably never to do so, Jerry says he loves what he does too much.  We are blessed that he does.
