The Corner is back

The Corner Ice Cream Shop on North Main has been closed for twelve years. This Christmas season, Marty and Debbie Ludas will be re-opening the 1897 building with a slight name change and completely new purpose and function. The Corner of Wake Forest will be an event space suitable for business meetings, parties, weddings and pop up events and the initial activities have already begun.

The first coordinated activity will be an Upscale Tag Sale Pop Up event. Neighbors in the historic district are bringing in select items for sale and they are being set up in arrangements and vignettes to browse and enjoy. Items of interest will include artwork, home accent pieces, furniture and books. For young friends and couples who are just beginning, there will be extremely beautiful and affordable Christmas decorations to purchase. The event will be on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 23 and 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Historic district walkers are welcomed to peek in on the merchandise through the North Main window and courtyard.

The Corner will host the Wake Forest Chamber of Commerce members in a special open house luncheon at 12 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6. Featured on the lunch menu will be Mrs. Chandley’s chicken salad recipe along with other snacks and refreshments. This program was arranged and sponsored by Jones Insurance and Buddy Gupton of Garner.

Then, the big event is Saturday, Dec. 7, from 12 to 5 p.m. The Corner of Wake Forest will be completely unveiled for Christmas with the debut of Billy Farmer’s Corner Art Collection. Billy is a well-known and beloved educator, musician and artist. He and Marty Ludas have worked together to assemble a portfolio of different art pieces that depict Wake Forest and places and subjects in the surrounding areas. His original artwork and reprints will be available for sale and could be the perfect Christmas present for someone.

While folks view the art gallery, we have two live Christmas music programs scheduled. Beginning about 12, the Dulcimer Darlings along with Boston Bob on guitar will perform. Later, Lee Holt on keyboards and vocals and son Jacob Holt on saxophone and clarinet will follow with their Christmas music program. The event is free to the public and sponsored by friends of the Corner. All Wake Foresters, especially the youngest like before, can now visit and experience the new Corner and see how it will again become the beloved meeting space it once was. For those wondering, Mrs. Chandley promises to be there.

  1. Know they have worked so hard on this project. Glad to see these events
and another historic venue. Congrats to all involved.

  2. Lovely! So excited The Corner will be active. I’ve always hated seeing it empty. Just out of curiosity, who is Mrs. Chandley?

    1. Rachel, Caroline Chandley operated The Coroner Ice Cream Store for many years — great place to get cones for the kids and lunch for the grownups who all loved her chicken salad sandwiches. It went out of business partly because of new requirements for grease traps.
