The Magnificents Band, six older guys from Burlington, will perform Sunday, May 12, at Six Sundays in Spring from 5 to 7 p.m. in the amphitheater at Joyner Park on Harris Road.
Their promos say the band “has a wealth of live playing experience in varied styles of music including classic soul, beach, Motown, top forty and dance.” That is born out by their bookings which in May include shows in Burlington, Efland, the Haw River Park and Asheboro as well as Wake Forest. The other performers for Six Sundays in 2019 are Orquesta GarDel on May 19, Tyson Brothers Band and Mister Felix on May 26 and the Marcus Anderson Band on June 2.
For the past few years, Six Sundays has found a home in E. Carroll Joyner Park with its new amphitheater cover, just completed. But did you know it began on the lawn at the Dr. Calvin Jones House, which at that time housed all the Wake Forest College and town memorabilia that is now in the Wake Forest Historical Museum? That was back in 1993, Ruth Ann Dyer said, and it was organized by the Wake Forest Cultural Arts Association. The same group under a new name is one of the sponsors still. Dyer said, “By the time Joyner Park was developed, it had long outgrown the museum grounds, and it was time it moved. A truly diverse asset to our community’s cultural enrichment.”
Longtime association member Barbara Massenburg remembered the fun of “working the crowd” to sell raffle tickets with Father Bob. “I just love that man. Drew Bridges used to look around his house for things to raffle. Bob Johnson would always donate rose bushes right after HerbFest. We got a lot of takers when Holding Oil donated $50 worth of gasoline. Ruth Ann Dhyer was the force behind the Billy Farmer rifle painting that I won. It was our largest fundraiser that I remember.” Anyone with memories of Sunday afternoons on the lawn welcome to send them to the editor for inclusion in the rest of the articles about Six Sundays.
A variety of food and dessert trucks will be on site for each Six Sundays in Spring concert in 2019.
Concert goers are also invited to bring a picnic from home but are reminded alcoholic beverages and gas and charcoal grills are not allowed. Two large charcoal grills are provided on site. Unleashed pets are also prohibited.

In the event of inclement weather, this year’s concerts may be relocated to the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre, 405 S. Brooks St. Updated concert information will be available by 3 p.m. on the day of the concert on the town’s Facebook page and by calling the Wake Forest Weather Line at 919-435-9569. Smart phone users who have downloaded the town’s app will receive a push notification message informing them of any schedule changes.
