Brief Bits

The Wake Forest Community Library on East Holding Avenue may finally open in February, though no date has been set yet, Mark Foresterieri, director of Wake County Facilities Design and Construction, said this week. Last February he was looking forward to a September opening, but the steel tariffs led to late delivery of construction materials and even Hurricane Florence helped delay construction. The library is being expanded from 5,500 square feet to 9,000.

Across the street, the Northern Wake Senior Center is being renovated and almost 9,000 square feet are being added as well as substantial expansion of the parking lot with a new entrance on the new section of Brooks Street. It will be completed later this year.

Construction of the Joyner Park Community Center is expected to be complete by this summer. The $12-million project includes a walking track, gym, multi-purpose rooms, dance studio and kitchen.

The Wake Forest Town Hall and other town offices will be closed Monday, Jan. 21, for Dr. Martin Luther King Day. Public services and garbage and recycling collection schedules will not be affected, but there will not be bus service – the Wake Forest Raleigh Express and the Wake Forest Loop – on Monday, Jan. 21. Both bus services will return to normal Tuesday, Jan. 22.

  1. I find it curious that the County is blaming steel tariffs as a part of the reason for the delay of the library being completed. I would like to point out that the voters approved of the bond to expand the library in October of 2007. They did not begin construction until 2018. Should I blame the last President for the delay of the start date?

    1. Speaking of construction, any idea when will the Senior Center open? I think that money was also part of the 2017 bond approval.
