Fifth Third Bank, one of the larger banks in the United States, has seven properties in five towns in Wake County, all purchased in 2010 and 2011 for a total of $7 million, and all destined to remain empty for the foreseeable future.
A spokesperson at Fifth Third headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio said Tuesday there are currently no plans to build more branches.
There are three fairly new Fifth Third Bank branches in Raleigh: one at 5500 Six Forks Road, one in The Atrium at 2501 Blue Ridge Road, and one, the newest it appears, at 7541 Creedmoor Road.
Wake Forest has two of the unbuilt properties as does Cary and the others are in Knightdale, Morrisville and Holly Springs. The locations, the dates purchased and the prices paid are:

Fifth Third has 1,154 branches in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Florida, Tennessee, West Virginia, Georgia and North Carolina.
There are six banks in Wake Forest, soon to be seven when the Bank of America in the Gateway Commons shopping center is complete. Wake Forest Federal Saving & Loan on Brooks Street is the oldest followed by SunTrust, which began in town as Durham Bank & Trust in the 1930s and was most recently known as CCB. It is now located in the Harris Crossing shopping center at Capital Boulevard and Harris Road. Branch Banking & Trust has two offices, one at 12213 Capital Boulevard and the other at 1821 South Main Street. Fidelity Bank had locations at 231 South White Street and in the Market of Wake Forest at 12201 Capital Boulevard. The other banks are Wells Fargo in the Heritage Station shopping center, 3600 Rogers Road, and PNC Bank at 3619 Rogers Road.
