Think people are concerned about their safety given the widespread continuing incidence of shootings in public spaces? Wake Forest police officers can tell you they are.
Within hours of the announcements that the Wake Forest Department would sponsor a Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events class on Tuesday, Aug. 14, and then a second class on Tuesday, Sept. 18, both classes were full with 25 people each and no additional registrations are being accepted. The department did say that future class dates may be announced in the coming days.
Led by Wake Forest Police Lt. L. Danforth, these sessions will teach participants what to do if confronted with an active shooter event.
Designed and built on the Avoid, Deny, Defend (ADD) strategy developed by the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) Center at Texas State University, the classes will provide strategies, guidance and a proven plan for surviving an active shooter event. Topics will include the history and prevalence of active shooter events, civilian response options, medical issues and considerations for conducting drills.
