Lilly Hare receives Woman’s Club scholarship

The Wake Forest Woman’s Club is pleased to recognize Lilly Hare as the winner of their 2024 Continuing education Scholarship for demonstrating outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and community service. Hare, a graduating senior from Wake Forest High School, plans to attend University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in the fall. Club members hosted Hare and her family for dinner at their April general club meeting and the $2,000.00 scholarship presentation. In addition to receiving her award, individual clubwomen presented Hare with cards, gifts, and gift cards to begin her university studies.

Age & Dementia series begins April 13

The Northern Wake Senior Center and the Wake Forest Senior Information Networking Group (SING) are partnering to host a series of free classes, workshops, and other events over the next several months to raise awareness about aging, Alzheimer’s, and related dementias. Each event in the 2024 Age & Dementia Education Series will offer attendees the opportunity to learn about dozens of aging and dementia-related programs, services, products, and resources – all at the Northern Wake Senior Center, 235 E. Holding Ave. These free events are scheduled from 9 to 11:30 a.m., and no registration is required. Senior Center hosting ‘Fear of Falling’ April 15

The Town of Wake Forest and the Northern Wake Senior Center will partner to host a “Fear of Falling” workshop on Monday, April 15, from 2:30-4:30 p.m. The session may be viewed online or in person at the NWCS, 235 E. The April 15 workshop will offer facts, statistics, and information about the risks associated with falling. Get toned up during May Month of Fitness

The Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources (PRCR) Department will offer a free outdoor fitness series five nights a week in May at E. Carroll Joyner Park, 701 Harris Road. Free and open to area residents of all ages, May Month of Fitness will consist of the following weekly classes: All classes are free and require no registration. Each will be offered on its respective night from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Joyner Park Amphitheater. During the Women’s Self Defense classes, instructors from Quest Martial Arts will teach participating women a variety of techniques to avoid danger and defend themselves if necessary. National Trails Day 5K/3K Walk/Run on June 1

The Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Advisory Board will host a family-friendly 5K/3K walk/run as part of National Trails Day on Saturday, June 1, at E. Carroll Joyner Park, 701 Harris Road. Check-in on the day of the event starts at 7 a.m., and the race begins at 8 a.m. Online registration is available at https://bit.ly/WFNationalTrailsDay. The entry fee for the 5K is $25 before March 31; $30 from April 1-May 14; $35 from May 15-30; and $40 the day before and day of the race. The entry fee for the 3K is $20 before March 31; $25 from April 1-May 14; $30 May 15-30; and $35 the day before and day of the race. Best fried fish in the area on April 19

The 2024 Wake Forest Fire Department Fish Fry is Friday, April 19, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. – or until all the fish plates are sold – at Fire Station #1, 420 Elm Ave. Best to go early because the event often sells out during the afternoon. Plates are $10 each and will include generous portions of fried flounder, boiled potatoes, coleslaw, and hush puppies. Cash, check, and credit card accepted. Fish fry proceeds will benefit the Wake Forest Firefighters Foundation. No preorders will be accepted, but both eat in and drive thru take-out options will be available.  Desserts will be sold separately for guests dining inside. Carroll Joyner Park, 701 Harris Road. StoryWalk is an innovative and interactive way for readers of all ages to enjoy a story and the outdoors at the same time. It’s also an effective way for young readers to practice active reading skills. Throughout April, pages from the children’s picture book, “Billy Bully Frog Learns to Love,” by Lizzie McInerney, will be displayed on posts along the Joyner Park trails. The Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department is partnering with Pickles and Play to host the 2024 Wake Forest Spring Smash Pickleball Tournament Friday-Sunday, May 3-5, at the Flaherty Park Pickleball Courts and Tennis Complex, 1226 N. Triangle real estate market update

Spring has sprung in the Triangle. The trees and flowers are budding, and the local housing market is tracking about the same as it has for the last many months.  The local numbers are in for March 2024 and here is what is happening.   The average price of single-family homes is up from a year ago. The mortgage rate for 30-year fixed is still hovering around 7%.   Here is an update for the end of March:   A year ago, the average sale price of a single-family home in the Triangle was $471,876 and increased $36,976 to $508,852 by the end of March. That is a 7.8% increase.   The number of homes for sale was 5452 a year ago and declined by 987 to 4465 by the end of March for a decrease of 18.1%.
