Stormwater, downtown engage WF Town Board

The Town of Wake Forest is engaged in a study of a stormwater utility and is launching a study of its historic downtown that will be concluded a little more than a year from now. During its work session Tuesday evening, they heard about both. Trey Shanks with Freese and Nichols, the firm contracted to work on setting up and operating a stormwater utility, gave an overview of the progress halfway through the study. The firm is using an advisory group for feedback and guidance which meets once a month and has monthly tasks which acquaint the members with different aspects of a utility. Rescuing Dr. Calvin Jones’ grave marker

In the spring of last year a man was clearing land south of Nashville, Tennessee for his new house when he unearthed a grave marker – a “ledger” that covered the entire burial – that was inscribed with the name of Dr. Calvin Jones and included his various titles and occupations while a resident of Raleigh, North Carolina – medical doctor, city mayor, general during the War of 1812, newspaper publisher. Curious, the man researched the name and soon was calling Ed Morris, the director of the Wake Forest Historical Museum with its separate Dr. Calvin Jones House, also a museum. It was later learned that around 1950 local descendants saw that the grave was sinking and the original ledger was cracking. Staples named assistant town manager/chief financial officer

The Town of Wake Forest is pleased to announce that Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Aileen Staples has been promoted to Assistant Town Manager/CFO effective July 1, 2023. As Assistant Town Manager/CFO, Staples will assist Town Manager Kip Padgett with a variety of Town priorities, organizational initiatives, and special projects. She will also oversee the following departments: Finance, Budget, Risk Management, Information Technology, Organizational Performance, and Wake Forest Power. A native of Woodland, NC, Staples served as Wake Forest’s Finance Director from 1991 to 1999, and again from 2001 to 2017 when she was named CFO. During her tenure, Wake Forest has earned AAA bond ratings from all three national credit rating agencies, including Moody’s Investors Service, Standard & Poor’s (S&P), and Fitch Ratings Services. Monday’s flag-raising will honor Nichols father and son

The Town of Wake Forest and several local veterans’ organizations will continue their monthly flag-raising ceremonies Monday, Aug. 7, at 11 a.m., in Town Hall’s Centennial Plaza, 301 S. Brooks St. The 49th Wake Forest Memorial Flag-Raising Ceremony will honor George W. Nichols-Pulley and his son, George W. Nichols, Jr., both of whom served our nation in the U.S. Army. Members of the Nichols’ family have been invited to participate in the ceremony, which will include patriotic songs, special remarks, a memorial wreath laying, and the ceremonial flag-raising. During the service, the Wake Forest Fire Department Honor Guard will raise the American flag and the U.S. Army service flag in recognition of the military branch in which the Nichols served. ‘Spider-Man’ will be shown in Joyner Park Saturday, August 5

The Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources (PRCR) Department will host the fourth and final event in this year’s series of Family Movie Nights at Joyner Park Saturday, Aug. 5, at 8:30 p.m. The featured film will be “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” Free and open to the public, Family Movie Nights feature a variety of family-friendly film favorites and genres, including comedies, dramas, and thrillers, all projected on a 26-foot inflatable movie screen in the park’s amphitheater. Each also includes a movie-related pre-show activity for kids beginning at 7:30 p.m. Food and dessert trucks will also be onsite. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket and/or chairs but are reminded that alcohol, smoking, and unleashed pets are prohibited. In the event of rain, Family Movie Night may be canceled. 14th Purple Heart Dinner will be Saturday, August 5

The 14th annual Wake Forest Purple Heart Dinner will be held Saturday evening, August 5, 2023 at Richland Creek Community Church, 3229 Burlington Mills Road, beginning at 5:30 p.m. This year’s guest speaker will be Jessica Dawn Lynch, a teacher and a private in the United States Army who was seriously injured and later captured by Iraqi soldiers during the battle for Nasiriyah on March 23, 2003. She was rescued by United States special operations forces on April 1, the first successful rescue of an American prisoner of war since World War II and the first of a woman soldier.
