Is your car or truck secure tonight?

Car break-ins happen all year long but tend to increase as the weather warms up. As a result, the Wake Forest Police Department is commemorating the start of spring and the return of warmer weather by encouraging residents to practice the “9 PM Routine.” Originating in Pasco County, Florida, in 2017, the 9 PM Routine is a national campaign that encourages residents to create a nighttime routine consisting of basic safety measures, including locking your doors, closing your garage, making sure no items are left visible in your car, and turning on your porch lights. Over the coming days, the WFPD will utilize its social media platforms to remind residents to follow the 9 PM Routine and make themselves tougher targets for criminals. For example, most cars that are broken into are unlocked. Criminals walk through neighborhoods, trying vehicle door handles, hoping to find an unlocked vehicle. The best way

Commissioners deny Forestville Road annexation

On March 23, just before the four-hour hearing about the Joyner or country club hearing, the Wake Forest Town Board took up the request to annex eight acres along the east side of Forestville Road between a new strip mall and the entrance to the Bridgeport subdivision. The developer, Robert Sheer, has also filed a request with the Wake Forest Planning Department to build 61 townhouses on those eight acres, with the majority of the townhouses on the site of the large pond with a 30-foot earthen dam. Neighbors and others who protested the annexation and the subdivision plans spoke at both the town board meeting on March 21 and the March 23 special called meeting. One of the neighbors, Matt Davis, called it not smart development but “desperate development.” Other neighbors said the traffic on Forestville Road during rush hours is “a parking lot” even before the 265 Meridian

Just a little history: The Madonna of the Highways Trailer Chapel

It may surprise newcomers – not old-timers – but it has not been that many years since the only churches in Wake Forest were Baptist, Episcopal, Methodist or Presbyterian – the congregations that could use the Wake Union Church – and there was strong prejudice against Catholics or Jews. We did not have Muslims to say nothing of Buddhists or other religions. One of the major local changes in attitudes was the recruitment of northern athletes to play baseball or basketball or football at Wake Forest College. When people saw that those young men had just one head and were polite and friendly, the change began. But before that anti-Catholicism was strong enough that George Bolus had to use a front man to be able to purchase the land where the first Catholic church in town, Saint Catherine of Siena, was built from Rolesville granite just as his house was.

Apology

The article about the quasi-legal hearing for the Joyner property-former country club on March 23 included a sentence saying that Wanda Mukherjee claimed standing to testify because she had been told by “Commissioner Keith Shackleford that ‘all citizens of Wake Forest have standing.’” Mukherjee did not say that. The Gazette mistakenly thought she had referred to someone called Keith and put written words in her mouth. The Wake Forest Gazette and its editor/publisher Carol Pelosi apologize to Wanda Mukherjee and to attorney and Commissioner Keith Shackleford. That was bad reporting. ###
