Still time to register for Public Safety Camp

The Wake Forest Police Department and Wake Forest Fire Department are partnering to host a “Public Safety Camp” June 9 and 10 at E. Carroll Joyner Park, 701 Harris Road. Geared for ages 13-15, the two-day camp will include sessions on basic first aid, CPR, fire extinguisher usage and firefighter tactics, as well as Police K9 and tactical team demonstrations, a mock crime scene investigation, and discussions about public safety careers. The cost of the camp is $30, and all campers will receive a Public Safety Camp T-shirt. A limited number of spots are available. Blue Cactus onstage this week for Six Sundays

Wake Forest’s popular Six Sundays in Spring concert series returns to E. Carroll Joyner this Sunday, May 15, at 5:30 p.m. with Blue Cactus on stage. Sponsored by the Town of Wake Forest and ARTS Wake Forest, the series continues each Sunday through May 29. Featuring free, live, outdoor entertainment, Six Sundays in Spring offers residents an opportunity to enjoy a variety of local and regional performers and an enriching cultural experience. The concerts will be offered rain or shine from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Joyner Park Amphitheater, 701 Harris Road. Parks and Rec offers free outdoor physical fitness classes

The Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources (PRCR) Department will offer a free outdoor fitness series four nights a week in May at E. Carroll Joyner Park, 701 Harris Road. Free and open to area residents of all ages, May Month of Fitness will consist of the following weekly classes:   Mondays – Camp Gladiator Tuesdays – Yoga Thursdays – Zumba Fridays – Dance & Get Fit Line Dance All classes are free and require no registration. Each will be offered from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Joyner Park Amphitheater. 50-mile challenge for National Physical Fitness Month

The Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department will commemorate “National Physical Fitness Month” in May by offering a 50-Mile Walking Challenge for area residents ages 11 and older. The concept is simple. Parks and Rec is challenging area residents to walk a total of 50 miles in May and use tracking cards to record their progress. Walking locations may include neighborhoods, schools, churches, parks, and greenways – just to name a few. There is no cost to participate, and online registration is open through Friday, April 29, at https://wakeforestnc.recdesk.com/Community/Program (search “Walking Challenge). Embrace Uganda Race held on June 4

Runners and walkers are invited to register for the annual Embrace Uganda 5k coming up Saturday, June 4, in downtown Wake Forest from 8 to 11 a.m. Sign up to run or walk at https://EmbraceUganda.org. Your registration and donations help provide clean water, medical care and education to some of the 2.3 million orphaned children in Uganda. The 5k begins and ends near Town Hall on Taylor Street. Official race timing is by Young & Associates, and the course is USATF certified. All participants receive an event T-shirt and free participation in the JerryCan Challenge, which replicates a Ugandan child’s daily trek just to find clean water. The event also features a Ugandan craft fair, raffles and prizes. Corporate sponsorships range from $500 to $125 and offer branding on event banners, T-shirts and websites. National Trails Day races on Saturday, June 4

The Recreation Advisory Board will host a family-friendly 5K/3K walk/run as part of National Trails Day on Saturday, June 4, at E. Carroll Joyner Park, 701 Harris Road. Check-in on the day of the event starts at 7 a.m., and the race begins at 8 a.m. Online registration is available at www.wakeforestnc.gov/meetings-events/national-trails-day-5k. The entry fee for the 5K is $25 before March 31; $30 from April 1-May 14; $35 from May 15-June 2; and $40 the day before and day of the race. The entry fee for the 3K is $20 before March 31; $25 April 1-May 14; $30 May 15-June 2; and $35 the day before and day of the race. Updated March 23, 2022) Plans under review at the Wake Forest Planning Department The March issue of the Monthly Report is listed below. *White Street Townhomes is a plan for 82 multifamily units and 30 townhouse lots on two lots owned by David Smoot at the intersection of South White Street and East Holding Avenue. This is a major change from the original plan for 79 townhouse lots. *Wake Union Church Road is the name for this proposed project but it is the former Parker-Hannifin (Schrader) site with a federal brownfield designation because of the trichloroethene (TCE) and other chemical and petroleum contamination in the groundwater, a contamination which has spread. Parker-Hannifin has committed to remedy the problem. The plan submitted by Kimley-Horn is for 193,000 square feet of commercial space, 300 apartments and 89 townhouses along with streets and parking areas which cover almost all of the 50 acres.
