Parks and Rec offers 50-Mile Walking Challenge in May

The Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department will commemorate “National Physical Fitness Month” in May by offering a 50-Mile Walking Challenge for area residents ages 11 and older. The concept is simple. Parks and Rec is challenging area residents to walk a total of 50 miles in May and use tracking cards to record their progress. Walking locations may include neighborhoods, schools, churches, parks, and greenways – just to name a few. There is no cost to participate, and online registration is open through Friday, April 29, at https://wakeforestnc.recdesk.com/Community/Program (search “Walking Challenge). Tracking cards will be emailed to all registered participants and available for pickup at Joyner Park Community Center, 701 Harris Road. Embrace Uganda 5K Race to be held June 4

Runners and walkers are invited to register for the annual Embrace Uganda 5k coming up Saturday, June 4, in downtown Wake Forest from 8 to 11 a.m. Sign up to run or walk at https://EmbraceUganda.org. Your registration and donations help provide clean water, medical care and education to some of the 2.3 million orphaned children in Uganda. The 5k begins and ends near Town Hall on Taylor Street. Official race timing is by Young & Associates, and the course is USATF certified. All participants receive an event T-shirt and free participation in the JerryCan Challenge, which replicates a Ugandan child’s daily trek just to find clean water. The event also features a Ugandan craft fair, raffles and prizes. Corporate sponsorships range from $500 to $125 and offer branding on event banners, T-shirts and websites. American Legion Pancake Breakfast on May 8

The monthly American Legion Post 187 famous Pancake Breakfast will be served on Sunday, May 8, 2022 from 8 to 12 a.m. The breakfast is presented every second Sunday of every month at the American Legion Hall, 225 East Holding Avenue, Wake Forest, NC., (across the street from the Wake Forest Post Office). The breakfast offers a menu of pancakes, several types of sausage (mild and spicy), coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and orange juice. The aspect that has made the offering unique is that customers can eat as much as they care to for one low price. Adults eat for $6.00 per person – Children under 12 for $1.00 and children under 7 eat free. The proceeds from the breakfast is used to assist rehabilitating veterans. #

Updated March 23, 2022) Plans under review at the Wake Forest Planning Department The March issue of the Monthly Report is listed below. *White Street Townhomes is a plan for 82 multifamily units and 30 townhouse lots on two lots owned by David Smoot at the intersection of South White Street and East Holding Avenue. This is a major change from the original plan for 79 townhouse lots. *Wake Union Church Road is the name for this proposed project but it is the former Parker-Hannifin (Schrader) site with a federal brownfield designation because of the trichloroethene (TCE) and other chemical and petroleum contamination in the groundwater, a contamination which has spread. Parker-Hannifin has committed to remedy the problem. The plan submitted by Kimley-Horn is for 193,000 square feet of commercial space, 300 apartments and 89 townhouses along with streets and parking areas which cover almost all of the 50 acres.

The Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce that Meet in the Street, its premiere arts and crafts festival, will be back on South White Street in downtown Wake Forest on Saturday, May 7. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. people can enjoy browsing more than 100 arts and crafts booths, listening to live music, tasting their way through the newest food trucks and enjoying activities with your children or grandchildren. Applications are now available but space is limited. This week at the senior center

The Northern Wake Senior Center is clearing its book shelves and having a giant book sale in preparation of accepting clean books printed between 2018 and 2022. The goal is to have more up-to-date books for loans. Please do not donate magazines. The book sale will be Wednesday, June 8, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. * * * * There is a new beginning knitting class with a maximum of six students. It will run for two weeks, and the first class began yesterday. May 3. However, if you call the center you can probably get into the next class. * * * * Another new class will be introduction to card making or how to produce beautiful greeting cards. It begins on June 8 and will be held for five consecutive Wednesdays from 11 to 12:30. Class fee is $10 which includes card stock and embellishments. Other items
