Weekend offers art, flowers, herbs, music

What could be better than a weekend filled with flowers, art and healthy herbs topped off with music in Joyner Park? That’s what is in store this coming weekend. In a tour sponsored by the Wake Forest Garden Club, visitors will be able to visit 11 beautiful local gardens, each with a local artist demonstrating his or her talents. The tour hours are 2 to 5 p.m. on Friday, April 29, and 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 30. Unfortunately for late-comers, all tickets have been sold. The Garden Tour tickets include food and wine at the After Party on the grounds of the Wake Forest Historical Museum at 414 North Main Street. The After Party starts at 5:30 and ends at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 30.  The food will be catered by The Lemon Tree of Wake Forest and Wine 101 will supply the wine and beer.

WFPD offering ‘Operation Medicine Drop’ Saturday

The Wake Forest Police Department is partnering with Wegmans to host “Operation Medicine Drop” Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. inside Wegmans at 11051 Ligon Mill Road. The drop-off area will be situated just inside the main Wegmans entrance facing Dr. Calvin Jones Highway/NC 98 Bypass. Operation Medicine Drop (OMD) is a prescription and over-the-counter medication take-back initiative that promotes proper medication disposal. By providing a safe and secure way for people to get rid of unwanted pills, tablets, and other medications, OMD helps prevent accidental poisonings and drug abuse, while also protecting local rivers and streams. The service is free, anonymous and no questions will be asked. Participants can help onsite personnel properly identify and sort the medications by disposing expired, unused, or unwanted medicine in their original containers with the drug labels intact. Just a little history: Why newcomers can’t find downtown, part one

Wake Forest is a quirky town, not following the usual pattern of a town growing up around a natural trading area like a crossroads and, when it grew enough to name the streets the main commercial area was almost always Main Street. Not here. And it was because Wake Forest began as a plantation named by Dr. Calvin Jones, became a manual institute after it was bought by the North Carolina Baptist Convention, changed to a college with one large building built in 1838, and only then began thinking about houses for the professors. Attorney General Josh Stein warns of public safety scams

Our office has received a report of scammers claiming to be from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) contacting North Carolinians on Facebook to try to steal their money. The scammers claim to be DHHS employees and ask people to pay them up front to win money. Fraudsters often use pay-to-win schemes to steal people’s money. They sometimes pretend to be government employees to make their ploy seem legitimate. You never have to make an upfront payment to win a prize. If you’re asked to, it’s a scam. Still time to register for Public Safety Camp June 9, 10

The Wake Forest Police Department and Wake Forest Fire Department are partnering to host a “Public Safety Camp” June 9 and 10 at E. Carroll Joyner Park, 701 Harris Road. Geared for ages 13-15, the two-day camp will include sessions on basic first aid, CPR, fire extinguisher usage and firefighter tactics, as well as Police K9 and tactical team demonstrations, a mock crime scene investigation, and discussions about public safety careers. The cost of the camp is $30, and all campers will receive a Public Safety Camp T-shirt. A limited number of spots are available. Big Bang Boom on stage for Six Sundays in Spring

Wake Forest’s popular Six Sundays in Spring concert series returns to E. Carroll Joyner this Sunday, May 1, at 5:30 p.m. with Big Bang Boom on stage. Sponsored by the Town of Wake Forest and ARTS Wake Forest, the series continues each Sunday through May 29. Area students, parents invited to 2022 WF STEM Saturday

The Wake Forest Technology Advisory Board is inviting area middle school and high school students and their families to the 2022 Wake Forest STEM Saturday on Saturday, April 30. Presented by the Wireless Research Center, this free family networking event is scheduled from 10 a.m to 2 p.m. at Joyner Park Community Center, 701 Harris Road. Celebrating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, STEM Saturday will expose students to a variety of STEM career options, while featuring STEM-related exhibits, demonstrations, and hands-on learning activities. James Warren honored with 50-year certificate

James S. Warren, Wake Forest community veteran advocate, received national recognition for being an active member of the Walter E. Cole, Post 187, American Legion for half a century. An official Recognition Certificate was presented to James during the April general membership meeting, April 14, 2022 at the Legion Hall, 225 East Holding Avenue, Wake Forest. National Commander Paul E. Parks and Rec offers free outdoor fitness classes

The Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources (PRCR) Department will offer a free outdoor fitness series four nights a week in May at E. Carroll Joyner Park, 701 Harris Road. Free and open to area residents of all ages, May Month of Fitness will consist of the following weekly classes:   Mondays – Camp Gladiator Tuesdays – Yoga Thursdays – Zumba Fridays – Dance & Get Fit Line Dance All classes are free and require no registration.
