Virus numbers continue to improve

By George Shaw Summary COVID-19 numbers continue to improve significantly.  The number of new cases and hospitalizations for our state and country has declined to levels last seen three months ago.  The number of newly reported deaths in The Tar Heel State dropped 35% compared to the previous week. However, the number of reported new deaths increased in Wake County.  And there were two additional deaths in Zip Code 27587.  And the number of new cases rose in Zip Codes 27571 and 27596. United States New cases are nearly as low as they were in late July 2021.  They averaged 820,000 daily on January 14 and around 100,000 a week ago.  They are currently about 60,000 on a seven-day moving average. Daily deaths continue to average roughly 1,700 over the last week, a reduction of about 15% compared to the prior week.  This is a decrease of around 35% since the peak

DOT wants Wake Forest to lead on S-Line hub grant

The Wake Forest Town Board work session Tuesday evening, March 1, had a short agenda with only a request to waive the fee at the Renaissance Centre for the Launch Wake Forest class graduation and several text amendments to the Unified Development Ordinance. Then at the end of the meeting, Mayor Vivian Jones brought out a letter from the state Department of Transportation and a request. The town, along with other towns along the S-Line, the CSX Railroad line from the Virginia state line to Raleigh which NCDOT is purchasing, has been meeting with NCDOT about a grant to do some pre-engineering for the line, specifically for a potential hub where all the mobility modes can meet – rail, bus, personal car, etc. It is a matching grant which means the communities have to agree to pay part of the cost, in Wake Forest’s case $190,000, though Jones said there

Opinion: Questions raised by meeting about old country club

To the editor: While the meeting didn’t provide any updated information on the revised plan and how McAdams was going to address the questions/comments to the first plan submitted to the Town Planning Department, Nil Gosh said his role after the neighborhood meeting was to take every question/comment back to the property owner so he would know how the surrounding neighborhoods felt about his proposed development…an interesting comment in my mind. If Carroll Joyner truly cared about our involvement in the development of this property, why has he chosen not to make himself available to meet personally with these adjoining neighborhoods so there could be a discussion about what type of plan would be in the best interest of both parties? In my opinion, asking for a change to the current zoning set forth in the UDO (Unified Development Ordinance) for the Falls Lake Water Supply Watershed/Horse Creek Overlay District

Opinion: Are we immune from drought?

The newcomers to Wake Forest since 2007 are an overwhelming majority. In 2007 the town had 10,155 residents; now we have 52,059. They experience somewhat quirky weather but on the whole we have a lot of Carolina blue skies with long growing periods – my husband’s snap peas and radishes are up and flourishing on the last day of February – lush vegetation and moderate temperatures that encourage a healthy outdoor lifestyle. But what if the quirky weather grows more extreme, as is likely? What if we – between hurricanes – have a drought? We experienced a short drought period in 2005, but in 2007 and the first part of 2008 there was a severe drought in Wake County and all the surrounding counties. Before it broke, we all began to wonder if we would have enough water for our homes, our businesses and our industries. Falls Lake, with a

Just a little history: Hinton’s Bridge and Gulley’s Station

(I will read most anything – I draw the line at cereal boxes – so reading a Civil War history was no stretch and I would probably like reading it again. And I’ve read a lot about local history, Wake County and Wake Forest, so I was struck by two familiar names in this book. The sketch below was first a message in the note that I send to all Gazette subscribers on Wednesday evenings. I’m reading This Astounding Close: The Road to Bennett Place by Mark L. Bradley, and I’ve been struck by two place names that were repeated as waves of retreating Confederate troops and advancing Federal troops headed for Raleigh: Gulley’s Station and Hinton’s Bridge. Hinton’s Bridge near Milburnie certainly was named for the Hinton family which descended from Col. John Hinton who moved into the eastern part of Wake County and built a log house with
