What’s going on in Wake and 27587?

By George Shaw The bottom line is that the pace of growth of virus cases and deaths has moderated at the state level. However, growth in new cases continues to increase significantly in Wake County and, especially in Zip Code 27587. Summary North Carolina has fared better than many states during the last several months.  The seven-day average for new cases across the United States was 71,000 on November 2.  This figure was 116,000 as of yesterday, a figure that will rise as four states including Florida have not yet reported data for yesterday.  This represents a 65% increase.  Average daily deaths have increased 35% nationally since November 17.  This percentage increase will grow as six states have not reported data for December 14. The growth in metrics for our state have moderated in the last week.  Tests were down 4% and reported new cases were up 4% during the last seven days.  Deaths

Just a little history: The Ford Building

(Reprinted from March 7, 2018, which means some of the tenants may have moved or taken a different name.) Sometimes you can uncover a lot of history by tracing the ownership and associated stories connected to just one building. It helps that Wake Forest has a long tradition of reusing, converting and renovating existing buildings. It also means that current owners and tenants are sometimes amazed or appalled by what they uncover when a water line leaks or the sewer backs up. This week we will look at what is called the Ford building on South White Street because it was built in 1927 as the first – and only – Ford dealership in downtown or the whole town. Today it houses the N.C. Society of Surveyors, Cawthorne Moss & Panciera, a land survey company, and Black & White Coffee. When it was built it had a showroom in front,

Opinion: Why no interchange at Stadium/Jenkins?

Like many of you I signed up to hear what the North Carolina Department of Transportation officials had to say about the plans to reduce traffic congestion and speed traffic on Capital Boulevard. Like many of you I agree that the current congestion and rapid increase in northern Wake population make a plan like the current one more than necessary and needed yesterday. What I could not agree with was the plan for a flyover bridge with service roads at the Stadium/Jenkins intersection. Why is it the red-headed orphan? That intersection has one of the largest if not the largest shopping and services center in the area, it has a large amount of the school traffic – buses and personal cars – at Wake Forest High School and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and it has increasing traffic from the wealth of residential subdivisions to the west. Why does it not

This and that

So this is how you make room for more housing in a town where open land is almost nonexistent. And how to do it very close to a downtown that is experiencing a burst of new ideas, new offerings. You may have been holding on to a piece of land that has lost tenants in an older building and has a very large vacant parking area. You wait until the right idea comes along, in this case a new way of building townhouses that are stacked up, called two-over-two. That in the editor’s mind is how we are going to see the three acres just behind CVS Pharmacy reworked. It has a long history. Late in the 1800s it was a spring factory but by about 1905 it was empty so Allen Young used it to start the classrooms which became the Wake Forest Normal and Industrial School, teaching generations
