NC’s COVID status becoming mixed

George Shaw Summary The COVID-19 situation in our state is becoming mixed.  Hospitalizations and deaths continue to decline rapidly.  However, the number of new cases in the last week increased.  This occurred at the state level and in Wake County as well as in several of our local zip codes including a 26% increase in the Wake Forest area. Most of the key metrics at the state level remain well above the lows for 2021 set in the early summer.  And the weekly total of vaccinations across North Carolina increased for the second week in a row. The welcome decline in deaths is forecast to reverse itself in early December although the rate of increase is expected to be modest.  In addition, the number of new virus cases nationally has increased nationally by 15% during the last three weeks.  The areas with the most rapid increases tend to be near the Canadian border,

WF Fire one of best departments in North Carolina

Tuesday night Wake Forest’s Fire Chief Ron Early was treated to a wonderful surprise. North Carolina’s Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey was at the Wake Forest Town Board’s meeting to announce that the fire department has earned a Class 1 ISO rating, making it one of only 18 out of 1,220 fire departments statewide to earn this highest rating. This was the surprise promised by Town Manager Kip Padgett two weeks ago. To make it better, town staff informed Early’s wife, son and his wife beforehand, and they waited in a nearby conference room with his grandchildren until just before the meeting got underway. Early, who as usual was at the meeting but sitting toward the back on the other side of the room, never saw them come in. After the announcement Early and his family joined Causey for photographs and later made a statement. “It’s an honor to achieve this

Major development and Publix in Rolesville

This is based on a News & Observer article on November 16, 2021. Yes, this is the Wake Forest Gazette, but sometimes we have to recognize what is happening in our neighboring towns, and for Rolesville this is a very big development in every way. The developer is Crosland Southeast, a commercial real estate company based in Raleigh, which has just announced they will build a complex called Wallbrook with 78 acres on both sides of South Main Street, a Publix grocery store as the retail anchor and a mix of retail, restaurant, residential and medical uses. The center of the development will center on a new location for Burlington Mills Road, which will shift south, go through a roundabout in the development and then cross South Main to deadend. The major part of Wallbrook will be on the west side of South Main. The cost is set at $120

New Wake Forest company wants to replace plastic

This originally appeared in the November 2021 edition of Discover Wake Forest, a publication of the Wake Forest Economic Development Department and the Business and Industry Partnership headed by Jason Cannon. It’s a long way from Kolkata to Wake Forest, but Anindya Mukherjee is excited to have made the trip. For its part, the town is also benefiting from his move, as Mukherjee chose Wake Forest as home base for PHAXTEC Inc., the pioneering company he founded in January of this year. The Wake Forest community itself touts an impressive “innovation infrastructure” offering businesses of all sizes direct pathways to success by creating spaces and resources for growth, access, funding, and more.  From a culture of mentorship to advanced research capabilities to a rapidly advancing ecosystem for entrepreneurs – all paired with an incomparable quality of life and the proximity of Research Triangle Park, Mukherjee is well positioned to see

Just a little history: Allen Young, a remarkable man

The buildings are gone and almost forgotten with only a few photographs left to keep alive the remarkable story of Wake Forest native Allen Young and his school, the Wake Forest Normal and Industrial School on Spring Street and other nearby streets. Allen Young, born in 1875, was the oldest child of freed slaves Ailey Fowler Young and Henry Young. The Young family tradition says he was born in the small saddlebag house on North White Street now called the Ailey Young house because she purchased it in 1895 for $105 from the widow of its builder, Wake Forest College professor and store owner William G. Simmons. Henry Young was a farmer and Allen along with his younger siblings worked in the fields. Allen Young also worked for several Wake Forest College faculty members including Professors W.R. Cullom, J.H. Gulley, J.L. Lake, G.W. Paschal, W.L. Poteat and B.F. Sledd. They

Step up now, Wake Forest, for the WFPD’s Turkey Drive

The donations for the Wake Forest Police Department’s annual Turkey Drive have been slow, and Wake Forest town and area residents need to donate now because the deadline is Saturday, Nov. 20. The Wake Forest Police Department’s annual Turkey Drive got underway in September, but donations are coming in slower than usual. Area residents can support this worthy cause by submitting online donations via PayPal at http://bit.ly/WFPDTurkeyDrive. Cash and checks written to the Wake Forest Police Department (WFPD) are also accepted. Anyone wishing to contribute cash or check to this year’s Turkey Drive should email Officer K. Letters for Santa Claus mailbox open in downtown

The Town of Wake Forest has installed a “Letters for Santa” mailbox in Jones Plaza at the intersection of South White Street and East Jones Avenue. Children of all ages are invited to bring their letters to Santa’s Mailbox anytime between now and Friday, Dec. 24, for immediate delivery to the North Pole. No postage is required, but all letters should include a return address. In an effort to ensure the safety of Santa’s helpers who previously opened each letter individually, personal responses from Santa are not possible this year. For more information, contact Downtown Development Specialist Hallie Willis at 919-435-9430 or hwillis@wakeforestnc.gov.
