There is no early voting for this election although you can vote by mail. Go to Wakegov.com, click on Departments and then on Board of Elections for full information about voting and the election. This first week of a series of questions, the candidates were asked to give a short biography, the reasons they decided to be a candidate, if they have attended any town or planning board meetings or served an advisory board, and if they had read the current town budget, the Community Plan, the Unified Development Ordinance or any other town plan? * * * * The candidates for mayor are Mayor Vivian Jones and Commissioner Bridget Wall-Lennon. More deaths than any time during pandemic

By George Shaw Summary We mentioned in recent columns that the metrics were flattening across North Carolina as well as locally.  Almost all of the major indicators declined during the last week.  The major exception is deaths.  Reported deaths in the last seven days exceeded those in any other weekly period since the start of the pandemic.  Deaths tend to lag new cases by 17 to 21 days so we are likely to witness modest increase for several more weeks. The patterns are similar for Wake County as well as our three Zip Codes.  The number of new cases in Zip Code 27587 reached 93% of the total for the all-time high timeframe set in mid-January during the week of August 25.  The corresponding figure for the last week is 59%.  Fatalities rose significantly in Wake County this past week. However, no new deaths were reported in our area. North Carolina North Carolina’s

Planners OK Quail Crossing, divide on South Allen

On Tuesday, Sept. 14, the newly reorganized Wake Forest Planning Board met at 6 p.m. for a training session and then met at 8 for their regular session. There were two agenda items: a rezoning request by Middleburg Communities for multi-family zoning on the 36 acres of Wellington Mobile Home Park, and a request by town commissioners to rezone three properties on South Allen Road to general residential 5. The agreed on the rezoning for the 36 acres, though Thomas Ballman and others questioned the private road linking Wait Avenue (N.C. 98) and Jones Dairy Road, the parallel onstreet parking because there is no provision for parking near the houses, and the six-foot distance between houses because they will be on a single tract, not individual lots. Chris Joyner said he was concerned by “so many (rental houses) in a small space,” but he later said it would be “an

Dire school bus driver shortage due to GOP actions

By Rob Schofield (This opinion appeared Sept. 14, 2021 in NC Policy Watch, a project of the NC Justice Center.) Zac Campbell paused suddenly and took a minute to gather himself, while colleagues shuffled toward him to touch his back in support. The emotion that can accompany the act of bearing one’s soul in front of a phalanx of TV cameras, photographers, and notepad-bearing journalists on a controversial matter of public policy had briefly caught up with the veteran Wake County school bus driver. For someone who usually does most of his public speaking into a rearview mirror as he addresses a gaggle of energetic kids, speaking in public in front of the state Legislative Building last Friday was clearly a new and challenging experience. After a few seconds, however, Campbell composed himself. He quickly made clear to the assembled audience the source of the emotion he was displaying: his

Help 47 families facing eviction, some homelessness

Donate to the Go Fund Me page in this article The 47 families who face eviction and could become homeless once they have to leave the Wellington Mobile Home Park could use the help of their Wake Forest neighbors. ONE Wake is partnering with the NC Congress of Latino Organizations to set up a Go Fund Me page with the website listed below. The page was created five days ago and had $3,350 donated as of Wednesday at noon with a goal of $40,000. The Gazette editor expects to see much more than that because Wake Foresters are generous people and recognize need when they see it. The families have been served with eviction notices with a January deadline because the land owner, former mayor George Mackie Jr., has a contract with Middleburg Communities to sell the land for 260 rental units – single-family houses and townhouses – with rents

This was the news in 2003

On Sept. 18 back in 2003 This is a regular feature about Wake Forest in 2003 when the Wake Forest Gazette began publication. Ammons purchases Athey plant, names it The Factory A year after Jeff Ammons took to heart the message on the for-sale sign, “Be creative,” he turned that vision to action on Sept. 4, purchasing the former Athey Products plant on South Main Street for $4.4 million. From now on it will be known as The Factory although the Sports Factory was once considered for the name as was the Entertainment and Sports Factory. Ammons said he waited until he had completed the leasing before he made the commitment final. And he has a stellar lineup of tenants, starting with the food vendors. The Armadillo Grill and the Village Deli will share a new building in front of the old manufacturing plant. Just inside the door, there will
