COVID: Key metrics are declining significantly

By George Shaw The trends remain positive as all key metrics are declining significantly. However, they remain well above the federal guidelines.  The Governor’s current Executive Order for reopening North Carolina remains in effect through March 26. It is unlikely there will be a significant change in the guidelines at that time. A more complete reopening remains more likely in April or the first part of May. Key COVID-19 Data North Carolina’s ratings remain better than most of the states. It remained the 15th lowest among the 50 states for the number of cases as well as the 13th lowest state in deaths per capita. And it remains the 28th highest in the rate of testing. Although trends are increasingly encouraging for tests, cases and hospitalizations, the numbers remain somewhat higher than the levels in state and federal guidelines. New tests in North Carolina are down 17% while the number of new

Town election is iffy this year

There is a very real possibility that the Wake Forest town election this year for mayor and two commissioner seats will be delayed until next year. The current mayor, Vivian Jones, and Commissioners Liz Simpers and Bridget Wall-Lennon are affected as are any possible candidates not yet announced. In a normal year, candidates for the three positions would announce and file in July with a November election. This year the U.S. Census announced Feb. 12 that it would not be able to release the data cities and towns need to draw their district would not be released until the end of September, and then Karen Brinson Bell, the director of the N.C. State Board of Elections, said it would take another two months for her office to process the data. Mayor Jones said, “We have heard that the Legislature is considering doing something but nothing definitive has been decided.” There

Town saw 85 permits for new homes in February

There is no denying that the home-building industry in Wake Forest is undergoing a boom not seen in recent years, a boom that could overcome this winter’s slump with all the rain if it continues. Builders pulled permits for 75 single-family homes and 10 townhouses in February as well as two new commercial buildings, the shell for the Heartland Dental at 13700 Capital Boulevard and the whole of the Kiddie Academy Daycare at 945 Gateway Commons Circle. Johnson Hyundai Wake Forest has found a home at 11000 Capital Boulevard, the triangle at the highway and South Main Street where Carlton Chappell chose to relocate his Ford dealership years ago when most car dealerships remained in downtowns. Also, the other approved fit-up was for Highpark Nail Spa at 408 South White Street. Inspectors also approved the pre-occupancy inspections for The Ironpeddlers at 2820 Superior Drive and Capstone Benefits Group Inc. at

Opinion: Need for volunteer fire fighters is critical

By Captain Edward Eason, Youngsville Volunteer Fire Department and endorsed by Tracy Mosley, Program Manager of the North Carolina Association of Fire Chiefs In every age, wherever people have built communities, the danger of fire has loomed on the periphery. Calm summer evenings and quiet wintery nights have been spliced by the sound of a fire station alarm. Men and women from all walks of life have scrambled to the call, the majority of which were volunteers. Volunteers staffed the first fire stations in the U.S., and not much has changed ……except their numbers. In Franklin County, North Carolina, the volunteer firefighter shortage has reached a critical emergency state. Every four days in North Carolina a life is lost to fire. That’s one person gone every week or less. Volunteers make up the largest part of our state’s firefighter personnel. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), 72 percent

Just a little history: Royall Mill matures, families arrive to make it work

(This is the third installment of a history of the Royall Cotton Mill, later the Royal Mill, based on a thesis written by Don P. Johnston Jr. in 1945 for a degree from Princeton University. His father, Don P. Johnston, was the president of Royall Mill before and during the Depression. (This week we will also quote from “A Common Thread: Life at Royall Mill and its Village, 1899 to 1996” by R. James Cox Jr., then a planner with the Town of Wake Forest. It was printed in 1996 and reprinted in 2007 for the Town of Royall Mills Centennial Celebration.) We will cover the first days of the Royall Cotton Mill from 1902 to about 1913. Although the mill branched out to other production, in this period it took raw cotton in bales off railroad cars, broke the bales apart, carded the cotton on the first floor and

Homeless in Wake Forest, Rolesville can get vaccinations, checks

There has been concern by some about the homeless people in Wake Forest and Rolesville and whether they will have a chance for the COVID vaccinations and the checks from the $1.9 trillion stimulus bill that just passed into law this afternoon. Emoke Anderson at the Northern Regional Center reported this afternoon the following: Here is what we know so far: As far as vaccinations go – the County is hoping to vaccinate all homeless individuals on the week of March 24-April 1. The plan is to offer them the J&J vaccine because it is a one and done shot. All shelters, Oak City Cares, WakeMed and street outreach teams will be involved in this county wide effort. There will be a white flag event organized on that week no matter what the weather condition will be. This date of the event is not set yet, but will also be

The phone scammers have been busy

The Wake Forest Police Department is again urging residents to guard against becoming the victim of fraud following a reported phone scam involving a plea for a donation to the police department. Many times, it’s hard to tell what’s a scam and what isn’t, but any time someone asks you to donate money over the phone to the police department or other law enforcement agency – it’s a scam. Gift cards are often used as part of this type of scam and others, including IRS, jury duty and grandparent scams. In such instances, when scammers ask for money or demand that you pay them, they’ll direct you to buy a set of gift cards. These gift cards can be for a range of stores or products, including Target, Best Buy, Sam’s Club, Amazon, iTunes, and Google Play. Then, they’ll ask you to give them the gift card number and PIN information
