Annexation night at the town board

Tuesday evening, after thanking Wake Forest Police Lieutenant Trent Coleman for his service as he retires and proclaiming the week of August 7 as Purple Heart Week, the town commissioners and mayor held three public hearings for annexation. The first was a part of the plan for the apartment complex Greenway Village at Heritage approved in 2019. This separate annexation is for land also along South Franklin Street on the opposite side from the apartments and also at the deadend of Forestville Road. A small shopping center called Heritage Corner is planned. The second was for 78 acres lying between the CSX rail line and Ligon Mill Road that is planned for the Merritt Capital Business Park and the petitioner was Merritt-WF 1 LLC. The third was for four acres on the south side of Durham Road where Crenshaw Trace, apartments for low and middle income older residents is planned.

Town events cancelled by COVID-19

The Wake Forest Board of Commissioners agreed Tuesday evening to cancel all town-sponsored events, including those at the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre, at least through October due to COVID-19. Many special events had already been canceled or postponed, such as Friday Night on White and Family Movie Nights at Joyner Park, but town staff were awaiting the board’s guidance on future happenings before initiating event planning. North Carolina passed a grim milestone this week: 100,000 COVID-19 cases. By noon Tuesday the toll was 102,861 cases (a figure probably about 10 percent higher because of uncounted cases) with 1,668 deaths. In Wake County there were 9,063 cases and 93 deaths. Our governor and health experts all say it is up to all of us to help stem this onslaught of cases and deaths by doing some simple things: Wear a mask, social distance when you have to go out of your house and practice good hygiene in your home and by washing your hands. Dr. Anthony Fauci adds two more ways to fight the pandemic: Close all bars and restrict restaurants to 50 percent capacity indoors. Just a little history: When Forestville flourished as a town

Long before Wake Forest College began in the house Dr. Calvin Jones sold to the North Carolina Baptist State Convention, Forestville was the major village in what was called the Forest District, now Wake Forest Township, in the late 1700s and early 1800s. It may have grown up because it was on a major north-south path used by Indians and settlers on a ridge between Smith Creek and Richland Creek. Also, an early Wake County road, Forestville Road, crossed that ridge and continued on toward the community of Falls. By the 1820s, the Forestville residents and the families on the large nearby plantations supported Masonic Lodge number 97 and the Macedonia Academy with John Purifoy [sic], Samuel Alston and William Alston on its board of trustees. Cornhole tourney set for July 24

The Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department will host a singles and doubles cornhole tournament on Friday, July 24, at 6:30 p.m. Open to players ages 18 and older, this inaugural event will be offered rain or shine at Flaherty Park, 1126 N. White St. Both the singles and doubles tournaments offer a two-game guarantee with awards presented to the top two players and teams in each category. Registration for both tournaments is underway at https://bit.ly/PRCRCornholeTourney.  The singles tournament is limited to the first 20 people to register, while the doubles tournament is limited to the first 10 teams to sign up. The cost is $10 per person for the singles tournament and $20 per person for doubles play. No registrations will be accepted on the day of the tournament. Esports gaming tournament signup underway

The Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department will host a two-day online esports gaming tournament featuring Rocket League on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 22-23. Open to players ages 10 and older, the inaugural Battle in the Forest will be played online and live streamed on Twitch.tv. Registration begins Wednesday, July 1, at https://bit.ly/BattleintheForest, and the cost is $5 per player. Teams comprised of three players each will compete in the two-day tournament which will run in conjunction with Bull City Gaming. Qualifying rounds will take place Saturday with the top eight teams battling it out in the finals on Sunday. Virtual Malpass Brothers concert July 25

Although the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre is closed and in-person events canceled, “the show must go on-line.” As we continue adjusting to life in the midst of COVID-19, the Renaissance Centre is set to begin offering a series of free online visual and performing arts experiences you can enjoy from the comfort of your home.  One of the Renaissance Centre’s signature events, The Malpass Brothers in concert, will take place virtually on Saturday, July 25.
