Despite COVID, town thrives

Tuesday night Jason Cannon, head of the town’s economic development department and president of the Wake Forest Business & Industrial Partnership, laid out the ways in which Wake Forest has been continuing to attract industry and business despite the COVID-19 pandemic. The Loading Dock incubator is purchasing the former Holding Cotton Company office and warehouse on South White Street and plans to open in late summer 2021 after extensive renovations. “We’re very excited about that,” Cannon said, because its impact could be 436 new jobs in Wake County and the Triangle, 147 of them in Wake Forest. He estimates the incubator will have an annual impact of $182 million in the county, and most of it will be in Wake Forest. Just north of the Loading Dock, Powerhouse Row, a combination of 18 apartments with first-floor retail, is complete. Cannon said seven of the apartments are leased and the first

Plannners OK 130-unit elderly apartments on Royall Cotton

Tuesday night the Wake Forest Planning Board approved Forest Pines Retirement Community, a 130-unit, three-story building on Royall Cotton Road just south of Sam’s Club. When Weingarten Investments in Houston, Texas sells the 21 acres for the project, that will be the last piece of land once planned for the Shoppes at Caveness Farms, a large shopping center fronting on Capital Boulevard between Caveness Farms Apartments to the north and the Walmart to the south. It was defeated in September of 2004 because the town’s zoning ordinance called for shopping center of more than 10 acres shall have access from two or more major thoroughfares or minor thoroughfares. At that time the site was on 80 acres with the front 40 acres zoned for highway business and the back 40, across a steep ravine with two streams, zoned for residential use. Now the back 40 is an apartment complex served

Just a little history: Remembering the Black Wake Forest Fire Station

(The Wake Forest Planning Department is updating the Northeast Community Neighborhood Plan, and part of the effort is to find out as much as possible about the history of the area, including the Black department, Station No. 2.) The Wake Forest Fire Department, the original one started in 1921 with Thomas M. Arrington as fire chief, was made up of all white men. Belatedly, and probably after persuasion and pressure from people in the northeast quadrant of town where everyone was Black, the department realized Black men could fight fires just as well as white men and created Station No. 2 in 1942. In 2007 one of the few surviving members of that station, Matthew Williams, then 73, talked about his experiences as a fireman and his life in Wake Forest with the Gazette editor. He was not one of the original firemen – he was 12 when it was
