Fourth Fireworks Friday!

There will be fireworks for the Fourth of July in Wake Forest, and as has been the tradition for 47 years, it will be on Friday, July 3. Nothing else will be traditional. There will be no stadium show, no children’s parade and no art and games in the park, all cancelled because of the coronavirus. And the fireworks will be virtual. Oh, there will be actual people setting off actual fireworks at Heritage High School, but Wake Foresters will have to watch it on the town’s Facebook page that night and on Channel 10 the rest of July. At about 9:15 p.m. on July 3 Facebook viewers can see an Independence Day live-streamed message featuring Uncle Sam, Lady Liberty and the Wake Forest Board of Commissioners followed at 9:30 by the spectacular fireworks. “It was especially important for us to provide the fireworks show this year in some form

Decline in volunteer firefighters critical

Fire chiefs launch program to find volunteers for Youngsville Who do you call when the frying pan catches fire? When you gash your leg trying to cut down an unwanted tree? When you can smell smoke or gas without being able to find the source? When a family member faints? You may dial 911, but almost without fail the responders come in fire trucks. These days when we are close to home or always at home, we are learning who the essential parts of our community are – firefighters rank at the top of everyone’s list. And in Youngsville, Wake Forest and every small town fire department an important part of the roster is made up of volunteers, community men and women who train and report for duty regularly and for emergencies all the time. 2020 and time to update plans

During June’s work session for the Wake Forest Town Board, Planning Director Courtney Tanner noted that the Community Plan with its widespread community involvement had been adopted in 2009. Since then there has been an increase of about 46 percent in the town’s population or 15,000 people. It is true. We now have 45,264 people – or probably more – in Wake Forest. It is time to update that Community Plan. The new plan will create a blue print for the future, guide the town in its decisions, establish policies about future growth, guide rezoning requests and is required under a new state law, NCGS-160D. Tanner has chosen Assistant Planning Director Jennifer Currin as the project manager, and after interviewing and assessing all the firms which applied, has chosen Houseal Lavigne Associates LLC as the consultant. The community outreach and engagement will begin this summer. The Community Plan is not

A partnership between the Town of Wake Forest and Wake Electric has resulted in the installation of four electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at Joyner Park Community Center, 701 Harris Road. Available to the public and free of charge, the charging stations are ideally situated for electric vehicle owners visiting E. Carroll Joyner Park. The two Tesla-specific and two Clipper-Creek charging stations are Level 2 charging stations capable of fully energizing an electric car in about three-to-six hours, depending on the vehicle. The four spaces also include extra room to meet ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990) requirements. Wake Forest previously installed similar charging stations in the Town Hall parking lot, 301 S. Brooks St., and the Depot Parking Lot, 110 S. White St. Designed to accommodate the public, these stations, along with the four at JPCC, are located in parking spaces reserved for exclusive use by electric vehicles.
