Town athletic fields opened Monday

On Monday, June 8, the Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department opened all Town-maintained athletic fields at all Town parks, except Flaherty Park Field #3 which is closed for maintenance. The fields, which have been closed due to COVID-19, will be available for rent beginning Monday, June 15. These amenities are not sanitized daily, and visitors must use at their own risk. In addition, all users must follow group size (25 max) and social distancing guidelines. Community health and safety is the top priority for the Town of Wake Forest. The situation surrounding COVID-19 continues to evolve, so the Town’s athletic fields are subject to close with limited notice. Sprayground due to open June 13

Delayed due to concerns about COVID-19, the 2020 opening of the Taylor Street Park Sprayground at 416 North Taylor Street will take place Saturday, June 13, at 10 a.m. Free and open to the public, the sprayground will operate daily in two-hour sessions, then close 30 minutes for cleaning, Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 8 p.m. The facility is scheduled to close for the season on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Weekday food program slated to end July 31

Wake schools slated to open Aug. 3, but that is not definite Andrew Brown Jr., chair of the Northern Community Food Security Team, has announced that the Northern Regional Center at 350 East Holding Avenue will continue serving as a weekday food drive-by distribution site until Friday, July 31. Until then, parents and caretakers of students ages 18 and younger can continue to pick up free, nutritious meals (lunch and breakfast) Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. as part of the Wake County Public School System Summer Nutrition Program. Distributed curbside at the regional center, the food is placed on a table to allow self-loading to minimize concerns related to the spread of COVID-19. Join the WF Star-Spangled Sing Along

From now through Sunday, June 14, Wake Forest residents and families are invited to use the instructions provided on the Town’s website to video themselves singing the National Anthem, then upload their video through an online portal. Please note: Complete instructions are now available at https://bit.ly/WFStarSpangledSingAlong. The deadline to upload your video is Sunday, June 14. Kino Mountain Productions, the Town’s video production partner, will synch up all the submitted videos into a virtual choir. The Town will unveil the finished product on its Facebook page and website on the evening of Friday, July 3. Virtual Malpass Brothers concert July 25

Although the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre is closed and in-person events canceled, “the show must go on-line.” As we continue adjusting to life in the midst of COVID-19, the Renaissance Centre is set to begin offering a series of free online visual and performing arts experiences you can enjoy from the comfort of your home.  One of the Renaissance Centre’s signature events, The Malpass Brothers in concert, will take place virtually on Saturday, July 25. Embrace Uganda 5K race now virtual

Wake Forest’s annual Embrace Uganda 5K race is still on this year, but in a virtual world. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, organizers have switched from a live, in-person race to a virtual, online event set for Saturday, June 13. Sign up at https://www.embraceuganda.org/EU5K2020. Participants can then run or walk their 5K from anywhere, at any time that day. WF VFW Post installs officers

Although hampered by the limiting conditions of COVID-19, the newly elected officers of VFW Post 8466 properly installed the officers that will lead the veterans group for the year 2020-2021. The installation ceremony was conducted Tuesday afternoon, June 9, 2020, in front of the Wake Forest Post Office. Installation Officer was Rich Heroux; the installed officers were Commander Joe Csuka, Senior Vice Commander, Glen Shoenling, Junior Vice Commander, Allen Zack, Quartermaster, Charlie Cable, Chaplain, Jim Dyer, Sergeant at Arms, Robert Sargent, Judge Advocate Howard Lowdermilk, Service Officer Brian Hopf, and Trustees, Greg Harrington and Dave Martin. Dip continues in residential permits

In May the downturn in residential building permits in Wake Forest continued, with only 22 single-family permits issued and 12 town house permits. The Wake Forest Inspections Department did issue one new commercial permit for a Take 5 Oil Change Center at 2880 Rogers Road is being built by G.W. Liles Construction, which paid $5,126.54 in fees. The building will add $323,000 to the tax base. The inspectors approved the fit-up for Family Health Solutions at 11635 Northpark Drive, Suite 320, and the pre-occupancy inspection for North Wake Comm Realty at 10520 Ligon Mill Road, Suite 116 and Advanced Rehab Technologies at 12339 Wake Union Church Road, Suite 105. Capital City Homes will build six of the townhouses on Etteinne Garden Lane in the Carraway Gardens area of the Tryon subdivision.
