Help needed for Family Fitness Fair on June 13

The Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department is seeking sponsors and health and fitness vendors for its third annual “Family Fitness Fair” on Saturday, June 13. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at E. Carroll Joyner Park, 701 Harris Road. The Family Fitness Fair is a fun, family-friendly event offered in conjunction with the National Recreation and Park Association’s “Family Health & Fitness Day” initiative celebrated every year on the second Saturday in June. “This special event promotes the importance of parks and recreation in keeping communities healthy,” parks and rec Director Ruben Wall said. “We support the residents of Wake Forest, and it is our goal to help families become healthier and live a longer life of health, wellness and empowerment by providing opportunities to be more active and make healthier choices.” Free and open to the public, the June 13 Family Fitness

Family friendly 5K race on June 6

The Greenways Advisory Board will host a family-friendly 5K race as part of National Trails Day on Saturday, June 6, at E. Carroll Joyner Park, 701 Harris Road. New this year, the day’s festivities will also include a Kids’ 1-Mile Fun Run for ages 12 and under. Online registration for both races is available at http://bit.ly/wfnationaltrailsday. The 5K entry fee is $25 before April 26; $30 before May 24; and $35 through June 6. Everyone who registers before May 24 will receive a race T-shirt. Same-day registrations will be accepted. The Kids’ 1-Mile Fun Run is for children ages 12 and under and the entry fee is $5. Senior center this week

Get ready to celebrate with the Northern Wake Senior Center when it holds a grand opening on Friday, March 27, from 10 a.m. to noon. There will be speeches, refreshments and tours of the totally new center. Town Manager Kip Padgett approved the donation of the last of the bicentennial history books, about 106 copies of “Connections . . . 100 Years of Wake Forest History,” to the senior center for a fund-raising activity, selling autographed copies of the book for $10 each. They were sold by the town for $20. You can buy the books after the speeches and ribbon-cutting. The proceeds will help the center and Resources for Seniors pay for teachers. The editor knows there are many readers who do not subscribe to The Wake Forest Gazette and is urging those people to subscribe. There is no charge, but you do get a weekly notice from the editor each Wednesday announcing a weekly update is on line. All you have to do is go to the first page, find the box for subscribe and enter your name and email address.
