December saw 23 single-family, 12 townhouse homes added There was a new high of 882 homes permitted by the Town of Wake Forest’s Inspections Department during 2019 – 546 single-family houses, 188 apartment units, 145 townhouses and three mobile homes, all unofficial numbers. In 2018 the town permitted 832 homes, 817 in 2017 and 823 in 2016. December 2019 saw a new low in the number of permits, only 23 new single-family homes and 12 townhouses. There were no new commercial buildings and only one fit-up, this at Tri-Area Ministry, 145 East Holding Avenue. There were pre-occupancy inspections for four new businesses: Trek Vitality dba Trek CBD at 1968 South Main Street; Wood PLC at 851 Durham Road Suite B; Young Won Trading Inc. at 5103 Unicon Drive Suite G; and Sunbelt Rentals at 4901 Unicon Drive. The Raleigh/Wake Partnership to End and Prevent Homelessness is preparing for its annual Point In Time Count which will take place Saturday, Jan. 25. Volunteers will be counting the homeless and providing them with care packages which include nonperishable food items along with hats, gloves, hand warmers and hygiene supplies. Unfortunately, there is still a shortage of hats, gloves, hand warmers and hygiene supplies. Wake has completed its 2020 reappraisal

Change in your tax bill depends on how county, towns set tax rate The Wake County Department of Tax Administration mailed about 395,000 notices to residential and commercial real estate property owners today, Monday, Jan. 14. The notice provides them with a first look at their property’s tax value as a result of the 2020 reappraisal, which was effective Jan. 1, 2020. “Our local market has been extremely active since 2016, and we have ample sales data to substantiate values calculated during this reappraisal process. Wake Forest to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy

Several local churches and community organizations will sponsor a free, public celebration honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Thursday, Jan. 23, at Friendship Chapel Baptist Church, 237 Friendship Chapel Road. This will be the 25th year of the celebration in Wake Forest. Flaherty Dog Park remains closed

Flaherty Dog Park at 1100 North White Street will remain closed for the foreseeable future as crews work to complete a series of renovations in time for a reopening in early spring. The dog park has been closed since January 6 while Town crews prepare the site for the start of work later this month by Blueprint Construction. Although original plans called for re-opening the park on Saturday, Jan. 11, Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources officials have decided to keep the park closed so crews can continue their efforts and remain on schedule. Signage announcing the temporary closure will remain posted at the park’s entrance. The Wake Forest Police Department has scheduled its next Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events class for Tuesday, Feb. 18. The session will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. inside the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre at 405 South Brooks Street. Food Shuttle welcomes new culinary class

Inter-Faith Food Shuttle announces the enrollment of a new class in our revamped Culinary Apprenticeship Program, beginning January 13, 2020. Five students of varying ages, backgrounds, and genders will participate in the program—all bringing with them a love of cooking and a desire to expand their knowledge and expertise in the culinary realm. Two races for National Trails Day

The Greenways Advisory Board will host a family-friendly 5K race as part of National Trails Day on Saturday, June 6, at E. Carroll Joyner Park, 701 Harris Road. New this year, the day’s festivities will also include a Kids’ 1-Mile Fun Run for ages 12 and under. Online registration for both races is available at http://bit.ly/wfnationaltrailsday. The 5K entry fee is $25 before April 26; $30 before May 24; and $35 through June 6.
