Second free bus begins Jan. 6

Beginning Monday, Jan. 6, there will be a second fare-free bus for people traveling in Wake Forest and a part of Wakefield. That second bus will run a reverse route – and both will have Saturday service. Since July of 2008 the town has had a local loop bus running an hour-long route every weekday in a clockwise direction. Beginning Jan. 6 there will be a second bus traveling counter-clockwise on the same route, cutting wait times from 60 to 30 minutes. Both will remain free of charge and will run those routes on both weekdays and Saturdays. Some enhancements to the loop bus service were introduced in October to make public transportation more accessible to more residents. In mid-October the single loop bus began offering an early/late extension along North Main Street and a mid-day extension into Heritage. At 6:32 a.m., 7:32 a.m., 8:32 a.m. and 9:32 a.m., the

Correction

The editor made an egregious error in the December 18 issue by moving the apartment complex Legacy Heritage to South Franklin Street. It is to be built on a tract south of the N.C. 98 Bypass along Heritage Lake Road and Friendship Chapel Road. The editor regrets the error and apologizes to the readers. However, and the hope is that this is not a pattern, she was cleaning off the kitchen table and put her husband’s car keys in her pocketbook along with hers. When it was time to leave Sunday he was searching rather frantically for half an hour until she thought – pocketbook. She hopes to stop relocating apartments and keys, but there are no guarantees. Please let her know if she continues. #

Update for Tri-Area volunteers

Hello! As you know, we are in the midst of starting the much-anticipated renovation. Here are four things to know those that regularly volunteer, 1)   Closing Dates: From December 22 until December 31, we will not distribute food. We will still need volunteers at TAM to help move any items remaining in the building to the pods and to help sort/store any donations that come in. We plan to do this on Monday, December 23, and Friday, December 27. On Friday, January 3, we plan to work on setting up the temporary building. All of these events run from 8 a.m. until noon. Please click HERE to email Sandy Matthews and let her know if you can help. We will reopen for food distribution on Monday, January 6. 2)   Temporary Operations: For the months of January and February, we will be operating out of a temporary building. Expect tight quarters, notices of volunteer opportunities on Tuesdays and Fridays in preparation of normal opening days, and changes

Part of Richland Creek Greenway closed for improvements

A portion of the Olde Mill Stream section of the Richland Creek Greenway has been closed because a contractor, Gaines & Company Site Development, for Raleigh Water (up until now known as the City of Raleigh Public Utilities Department) is making extensive improvements to the sewer system in that area. The work is expected to be completed and the greenway reopened in early January 2020. The work includes the excavation and replacement of the sewer line in existing easements behind homes along Barnford Mill Road, Hallswick Place and Wheddoncross Way. Construction activities also include the installation of temporary above-ground piping systems. The improvements are needed to replace aging sewer infrastructure and increase system capacity to accommodate new development. Signage and barricades have been posted to inform the public of the greenway closure. Officials strongly urge residents to obey the posted signage and avoid the construction site. There are three possibilities for hearings during January and February before the Wake Forest planning and town boards: the Kinsley subdivision, an amendment for the Kitchin Farms subdivision and the Cottages at Cardinal Hills. Senior center this week

We hope to have a definitive schedule in the January 8 issue for a move-in date at the Northern Wake Senior Center. The last time we drove by there was still a sign that the building was closed. At the Dec. 3 town board work session, David Williams, owner of Focus Design Builders which has the $3.9 million contract to renovate and enlarge the building and parking lot, said he it will be another two or three weeks before the Northern Wake Senior Center will be open to the public. See Brief Bits for more. The target completion date was May 1, 2019. Focus Design won the contract because it promised to complete the work within 269 days – nine months – when the other bidders’ numbers were 300 to 365 days. The town board learned on Feb. 5 that the record amount of rain in 2018 – 36 days
