Large apartment complex on planners’ agenda Nov. 7

Greenway Village, an apartment complex tucked in beside Smith Creek on South Franklin Street abutting Sheetz, will be on the agenda for the Thursday, Nov. 7, meeting of the Wake Forest Planning Board. The date was shifted because of Tuesday’s election. The Greenway plan calls for three connected four- and five-story buildings holding 36 apartments each – 108 units – plus a community center. And, if the Unified Development Ordinance is amended, two four-story buildings with 48 units each would be added for a total of 204 apartment units. All of that information is from the plans submitted by the developer, Site Collaborative, a part of the Active Developments Map provided by the Wake Forest Planning Department. However, the August 2019 Monthly Development Report, the most recent on the town’s website, says there will be 188 units and a 7,600-square-foot recreation center on 10.08 acres. Happening at the museum

Halloween on North Main Street By Jennifer Smart, Assistant Director The Wake Forest Historical Museum For the first time in its history, the Wake Forest Historical Museum is taking part in the ghostly, glittery extravaganza that is North Main Street’s Halloween! Cobwebs and lights will mark the spot for trick-or-treaters to stop at the steps of the historic Calvin Jones House; volunteers will distribute candy; and we’ll all have a fabulous time! This is a special event for us and an exciting way to participate in this beloved tradition that literally takes place right outside our front door. North Main Street on All Hallows Eve is quite possibly the largest unofficial family-friendly Halloween celebration in the Triangle. Over the decades it’s evolved into an informal block party, with homeowners pulling out all the stops. Decorations run the gamut from adorable to spooky to slightly terrifying. Adults wear costumes. Eerie sightings along North Main

What would Halloween be without ghosts? Although there are ghosts in some of the area’s oldest homes, Wake Forest’s North Main Street, once Faculty Avenue, seems to have an unusually large number of the spirits. Beginning on the south end, there is the Indian who was apparently disturbed when Bill and Louise Howard (who have since sold the property) began their extensive renovations that changed the old Reid house into an elegant bed and breakfast. Bill believed the Indian was buried on their property. The vision or apparition or ghost appeared to three men – Bill, his brother-in-law, and a man helping with the renovations – one day when they were working under the house. Everything became quite cold, they turned and they saw the ghost, who quickly vanished. He has not been seen since, and Bill believed he was relieved to see that they were carefully redoing the house

Halloween safety tips

Since Halloween is always Oct. 31, that’s the day the Town of Wake Forest encourages families to go door-to-door in costumes for candy and fun. The Wake Forest Police Department also recommends that little ghosts and goblins trick-or-treat between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. To ensure a safe and happy Halloween for everyone, the Police Department offers the following safety tips: Attire & Accessories *  Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure shoes fit well and costumes are short enough to prevent tripping or entanglement. *  Consider adding reflective tape to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility. *  Secure emergency identification (name, address, phone number) discreetly within Halloween attire. *  Because masks can limit or block eyesight, consider non-toxic makeup and decorative hats as safer alternatives. *  When shopping for costumes, wigs, and accessories, look for and purchase only those with a label clearly indicating
