New terms for members of the town’s advisory boards begin in January after appointment in December, and you can apply now for a seat on one or up to three of the boards listed below. Applications will be accepted through Thursday, Oct. 31, for appointment to the following volunteer commissions:   Board of Adjustment Cemetery Cultural Resources Design Review Greenway Historic Preservation Human Relations Planning Public Art Recreation Senior Center Technology Urban Forestry Residents may apply for up to three advisory boards. Tree care class ends Lawn & Landscape series

The Town of Wake Forest is introducing a new educational series for residents interested in learning about lawn care, landscaping, plants and trees. The new Lawn & Landscape Series is comprised of Lawn Care 101 workshops offered by the Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department and Tree Talk seminars hosted by the Urban Forestry Board. The first two workshops have been held. The 2019 Lawn & Landscape Series concludes Thursday, Oct. 24, with Proper Tree Care. Led by Urban Forester Luke Devores, this free class will offer useful tips on proper planting techniques, tree identification, pruning, fertilization and more. The session is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Ground Floor Meeting Room of the Wake Forest Town Hall, 301 S. Brooks St. The room is most easily accessed via the facility’s Taylor Street entrance. Civitans selling pecans, other nuts

The Wake Forest Civitan Club is selling its 16-ounce bags of “fresh off the tree” shelled pecans for $12 per bag. Specialty “gift-bagged” nuts such as pecan logs, chocolate covered pecans, and cashews, just to name a few, are also available. Cops holding 13th annual Turkey Drive

The Wake Forest Police Department is now accepting monetary donations through Saturday, Nov. 23, as part of its 13th Annual Turkey Drive. Area residents can support this worthy cause by submitting online donations via PayPal at http://bit.ly/2019TurkeyDrive. Cash and checks written to the Wake Forest Police Department are also accepted. Anyone wishing to contribute cash or a check to this year’s Turkey Drive should contact Det. M.W. The Gobblers will run Nov. 28

The Jim Allen Group presents the 14th Annual Gobbler’s Run 5K on November 28. With all proceeds benefiting the Wake Forest Boys & Girls Club, this family-friendly Thanksgiving Day event is a great way to bring families together and support the community. The 3.1 mile loop is an easy stroll through downtown and historic Wake Forest. Push your kids or bring your dog – strollers and pets are welcome. You’ll get a race T-shirt and be able to eat more turkey without the guilt! Seats still available in active shooter class

The Wake Forest Police Department has scheduled its next Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) class for Tuesday, Oct. 29. The session will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. inside the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre at 405 South Brooks Street. There is no cost to participate, but registration is required at http://bit.ly/WFPD_CRASE. Class size is limited to the first 100 people to register. Please note: Every participant must register individually – one person per form. Rise Against Hunger on Oct. 26

The Wake Forest Rise Against Hunger event will be held Saturday, Oct. 26, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Wake Forest United Methodist Church. Organizers say the volunteers will pack about 55,000 meals. The organizers will start setting up at 8 a.m. and volunteers are asked to check in between 9:30 and 10 before the approximately two hours it will take to pack the food and clean up afterward. The Growth Rate Updated September 25, 2019 Northern Wake Senior Center will be completed sometime in September, it now appears. The network cabling has been installed, and AirFiber is scheduled to install in September. The reconstruction is adding 9,000 square feet plus renovations throughout the original center on East Holding Avenue. There will be a new entrance to the building, an expanded parking lot and a new parking lot entrance on the extension of Brooks Street which has finally connected Elm Avenue to East Holding. Among the new features will be an addition to the exercise room, a new roof and a new multipurpose room. Focus Design Builders has the $3.9 million contract and the target date for completion is May 1, 2019.
