WRAL has it right – Enough!

(This editorial was published by WRAL-TV over the weekend and has been updated with new numbers of deaths.) After the shooting rampages in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio we are saddened. We mourn the losses to the families of those killed and feel for the injured. These communities will never be the same. The devastation of a few minutes is an indelible memory for the ages. How could this happen? We’re angered that, amid the recriminations and speeches, the calls for change and action will be muted by the political maneuvering of the National Rifle Association and gun manufacturers. Soon, it will be back to business as usual for those who should know better and who need to act. It is past time to get something done. In much of the world, news of mass killings comes from places in the midst of civil wars, international conflicts or violent rebellion. Weapons

Board OKs sidewalk dining, drinking and affordable housing

The Wake Forest commissioners Tuesday night said they had heard from downtown business owners and want to see a draft ordinance allowing cafes and restaurants to serve food, beer and liquor on town streets. They also finalized an agreement in which the town will upgrade and pave Brewer Circle at a cost of $300,000 and in return a private developer will plat nine lots and build affordable houses on them. Within the past four years the town has also turned the dirt track called Caddell Street into a paved street and sold the resulting six lots to Habitat for Humanity Wake. Another developer has purchased a separate nearby tract on which he will build four affordable homes. Affordable means that the homes will be sold to individuals or families making between 80 percent and 120 percent of the median local income. The homes must remain in private ownership. Lisa

Planners vote for 290 apartments on Rogers Branch Road

Tuesday night the Wake Forest Planning Board recommended the town board approve a request to build 290 apartments on Rogers Branch Road, a deadend street behind the Harris-Teeter on Rogers Road. The plan met opposition from neighbors. The Meridian at Rogers Branch apartments would be built on about 12 acres on the south side of Rogers Branch Road. There would be two large apartment buildings, both four stories tall, with elevators and six two-story apartment building around the perimeter of the property. A small family cemetery will be surrounded by a black metal fence. There will be a pool and clubhouse. Part of the plan is to extend Rogers Branch Road through a commercial project, Wheatfield on Forestville Road, to align with the traffic signal at Foundation Drive. (See the town board work session article for the rest of the plans for Foundation Drive.) This would provide two ways to

Holding Pool reopened Sunday after parasitic threat

The Holding Park Aquatic Center reopened Sunday, Aug. 4, after it was closed quickly Thursday, Aug.1, because Wake County health officials notified officials in the Wake Forest Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department that a person who had contracted Cryptosporidium or Crypto for short somewhere else had visited the pool. The department immediately closed the pool as a precaution and began the process of hyper-chlorination to disinfect the pool. According to Aquatech Pool Management Group, the company that manages the aquatic center, staff implemented procedures “that exceed requirements as a precautionary measure.” In addition, Aquatech staff spent the day Saturday disinfecting door knobs, countertops, furniture and restrooms. Monarch City USA, a non-profit that advocates for cities and town to actively recover their monarch butterfly populations, has named Wake Forest the first Monarch Town USA in North Carolina, meaning the town is committed to preserving and growing the monarch butterfly population. It has done so by setting aside a monarch butterfly garden with the monarch- attracting milkweed and other nectar plants in E. Carroll Joyner Park on Harris Road. Town crews recently installed signs at the park identifying the butterfly habitat. The town also urges residents to plant milkweed in their gardens. Monarchs rely on the milkweed and nectar plants for their food and home. According to the Monarch City USA website, monarchcityusa.com<http://www.monarchcityusa.com/>, nearly a billion monarch butterflies have vanished since 1990 because those plants are disappearing across America. Monarch City USA encourages municipalities across the nation to reverse the trend and support the monarch butterfly population by
