Seven people want town board seats

Now it is official: Seven people will be on the Nov. 5 ballot seeking a seat on the Wake Forest Town Board, and the seven are Greg Bartholomew, Jim Dyer, Heather Holding, Chad Sary, Anne Reeve, Sean Sullivan and Adam Wright. Reeve and Sullivan filed on July 18 and their short biographies are included in this article. There are three seats on the five-person town board that will be open in November. Reeve is seeking a fourth term; Commissioners Greg Harrington and Brian Pate have decided not to seek another term. Wake Forest town elections are nonpartisan and the three candidates with the most votes on Nov. 5 will be elected. Commissioners serve four year terms. Three commissioners will be elected this year, and in 2021 town voters will elect a mayor and two commissioners. Commissioners are paid an $8,000 salary. Just a little history: What happened in 1961?

A lot happened, beginning with the early morning of Jan. 25, when a man going to pick up newspapers for delivery spotted a fire in the Keith’s grocery store on South White Street. The fire had a good start, and it was one of the worst times for a fire with below-freezing temperatures, rain and sleet, all in the dark. All the firemen and their equipment from both Wake Forest and Rolesville were coated with ice, and they found it hard to stand while wrestling heavy hoses. Frank Keith and his sons, Edwin and Bruce, all firemen, tried to rescue what they could from the office, and while they were inside a heavy iron wheel at the top of the elevator fell and nearly hit Frank. Forest Moon to stage ‘Steel Magnolias’

‘Mulan’ onscreen for Joyner movie night

The Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department is hosting a free, monthly outdoor movie series through August at E. Carroll Joyner Park. The third in the series of Family Movie Nights at Joyner Park will feature the film “Mulan” on Saturday, July 27, at 8:30 p.m. Each Family Movie Night also includes a movie-related pre-show activity for kids. Saturday’s reception to kick off two annual art exhibits

The Wake Forest Public Art Commission will host a special reception in the Arts Annex of the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre Saturday, July 27, from 9 a.m. to noon to formally open its 2019 Wake Forest Temporary Sculpture Exhibit and its Spotlight on Wake Forest Artists Exhibit. Light refreshments will be provided. The reception will have an informal, open house-style format, so you may drop in anytime between 9 a.m. and noon. Speeds on four roads change Aug. 1

Beginning Thursday, Aug. 1, speed limit changes will take effect along the following four Wake Forest roads: Caveness Farms Avenue between Capital Boulevard and Ligon Mill Road – Speed limit increased from 25 mph to 35 mph; South Franklin Street between Dr. Calvin Jones Highway and East Holding Avenue – Speed limit increased from 25 mph to 35 mph; West Oak Avenue between North Wingate Street and North Main Street – Speed limit reduced from 35 mph to 25 mph; and North Allen Road between Wait Avenue and East Juniper Avenue – Speed limit reduced from 35 mph to 25 mph. The speed limit increases along Caveness Farms Avenue and South Franklin Street are in areas adjacent to roadway connections that have a high level of speed and currently offer limited time for drivers to decrease speed safely. ARTS Wake Forest invites artisans and craftspeople to participate in the fourth annual Wake Forest Holiday Artisans’ Market. The Market will take place on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. inside and outside of the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre in downtown Wake Forest. The Holiday Artisans’ Market will feature a variety of arts and crafts in a wide range of prices. The market will showcase items handmade by regional artisans and crafts people including potters, fine artists, photographers, woodworkers, fiber artists, furniture makers, jewelry artists and more. The Wake Forest Human Relations Council (HRC) is soliciting youth (ages 10-18) and adult (ages 19 and older) nominations for the 10th Annual Good Neighbor of the Year Award. The award recognizes Wake Forest residents who work to improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods without seeking recognition for their efforts. Nominees are sought in three divisions: adult, middle school youth and high school youth. To qualify, a nominee must be a Wake Forest resident who has made a significant contribution to the community between Sept. 1, 2018, and Aug. 31, 2019.
