The Wake Forest Human Relations Council (HRC) is soliciting youth (ages 10-18) and adult (ages 19 and older) nominations for the 10th Annual Good Neighbor of the Year Award. The award recognizes Wake Forest residents who work to improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods without seeking recognition for their efforts. Nominees are sought in three divisions: adult, middle school youth and high school youth. To qualify, a nominee must be a Wake Forest resident who has made a significant contribution to the community between Sept. 1, 2018, and Aug. 31, 2019. Employees of the Town of Wake Forest are not eligible. Help shape the future of Flaherty Dog Park

The Recreation Advisory Board will host two public meetings in July and conduct an online survey to solicit public input about renovations to Flaherty Dog Park. “Picture Flaherty Dog Park” is the name given to the town’s approach to inviting residents to share their ideas about the park’s future. As part of the initiative, the Recreation Advisory Board will host public meetings at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23, and Thursday, July 25, at the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre, 405 South Brooks Street. Each session will begin with a brief presentation, followed by an open forum discussion where attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and share suggestions. Movies help renew memories for dementia sufferers

The Wake Forest Renaissance Centre and SING Wake Forest are partnering to host a special Memory Café on Sunday, July 28, from 2-4 p.m. entitled “Renewing Memories Through Movies.” As part of the 2019 Understanding Dementia Series, the program will feature a screening of the 1952 MGM musical classic “Singing in the Rain” starring Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds. Attendees will also be treated to an ice cream float of their choice and other movie treats. Admission is free and all ages welcome for this family event. Youth Empowerment Workshop Aug. 17

The Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department will sponsor a Youth Empowerment Workshop for young men and women ages 12 through 17 on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Alston-Massenburg Center at 416 North Taylor Street. The workshop is designed to help young men and women learn skills and strategies to make a positive difference in their lives and neighborhoods. Discussion will be geared towards empowering students to help create an inclusive and connected community. The session will also include a school supplies giveaway and raffle. Habitat hosts homeowner info meeting July 18

This year Habitat for Humanity of Wake County is building six new single-family homes in Wake Forest and will host one homeowner information session for anyone interested in learning more about buying a new, affordable home this year. The first session was held on June 26. The remaining session is open to anyone who would like to learn more. It will be held at the Wake County Northern Regional, 350 East Holding Avenue, Wake Forest on Thursday, July 18, from 5 to 8 p.m. During the session, Habitat Wake’s Homeownership and Neighborhood Programs team will discuss our affordable home ownership program and explain how families can pre-qualify. The Wake Forest Police Department will sponsor a Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) class on Wednesday, July 31, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.
