The town says thanks

Why only 11 minutes of fireworks? (This was provided by Bill Crabtree, the communications and public affairs director for the Town of Wake Forest.) Thanks to everyone who turned out for Wednesday’s Fireworks Spectacular at Heritage High School. Attendance estimates are difficult, but our best guess is that well over 20,000 area residents watched the show either inside Husky stadium or from one of the other viewing areas on the school campus. That number doesn’t include the hundreds and possibly thousands of others who observed the fireworks display from vantage points throughout the surrounding area. A sincere and special thanks to our numerous sponsors for their wonderful generosity. Wednesday’s festivities, including the entertainment and fireworks show, were supported by the generous financial and in-kind donations of PowerSecure, Gladwell Orthodontics, Capital PowerSports, Capital Chevrolet, Mitchell Heating & Cooling, O2 Fitness Clubs, Foxy 107/104, The College at Southeastern, McPherson Family Eye Care, Kerr

More about the Fourth

Bill Crabtree, the communications and public affairs director for the town, said early Wednesday, “We still have not received an explanation from the fireworks company as to the reason for the abbreviated fireworks show.” Ruben Wall, the director for the town’s parks, recreation and cultural resources department, spoke in mid-afternoon to the fireworks company. Crabtree reported the following: “Ruben spoke earlier today to a fireworks company representative who assured him the Town received the same number of fireworks this year as last. He further stated the shorter program was likely due to the fact the technician shot the fireworks off at a faster pace. Still, the fireworks company has offered to refund a portion of our money and give us a discount next year. As for the Town’s position, no decision has yet been made concerning next year.” The town budgeted $38,500 for the fireworks, part of the parks and

Brief Bits

Two programs to provide meals for Wake Forest children are underway at the Northern Regional Center and the Alston-Massenburg Center. Emoke Anderson with the Norther Community Food Security Team says, “We are feeding a lot more children and the food quality is better. On average we serve a little more than 100 children per week per site,” which means 200 children are getting a good meal every weekday this summer. Also, Anderson said, “The Northern Regional Center partnered with Melanie Floyd, Community volunteer, who is a big advocate for composting. She picks up the food waste every day the NRC distributes food and drops it at her garden’s composting bin.” Would you like to be a part of this meals program? Anderson wrote: “Volunteers who would like to join the NRC team can contact me: Em Anderson at emoke.anderson@wakegov.com . To volunteer at the Alston Massenburg site, people can contact: Joy Shillingsburg

Stay off the train tracks!

Although many people think train tracks are open to public access, all railroad tracks are private property. That’s why Wake Forest officials are warning area residents to stay off the tracks year-round but especially during Friday Night on White and other downtown events. The CSX railroad through Wake Forest is an active freight line, operating almost every day of the year with an irregular schedule determined by the requirements of companies which use its services. Wake Forest Police have observed ever-growing numbers of people walking, playing and taking pictures on the railroad tracks in downtown Wake Forest during Friday Night on White. In response, additional police and event staff will be assigned to monitor the train tracks during the July 12 concert. Signage will also be posted warning the public to stay away. Anyone caught trespassing on the train tracks may be subject to criminal charges. According to NC General
