Filing starts Friday for WF town board

Filing begins Friday, July 5, for three open seats on the Wake Forest Board of Commissioners, and as of this week there are two announced candidates, Chad Sary and Heather Holding. Of the three commissioners whose terms end in December, Commissioner Greg Harrington announced at the June 18 town board meeting that he will not run for a third term; Commissioner Anne Reeve, who has said she is still deciding, is probably out of town because she did not respond to an email this week; and Commissioner Brian Pate said earlier this year he will not try for a second term. Sary, who made his candidacy public Monday, July 1, was an employee of the Town of Wake Forest for almost 15 years as a planner, senior planner and assistant planning director. He also serviced on many committees and was involved in many community events while with the town. He

Opinion: A resident questions town’s SunTrust purchase

To the editor: I have read the article concerning the former SunTrust Bank property that the Town of Wake Forest had purchased last year. I find it concerning that the Town has contracted with UNC to determine what is the best type of use for this property. I was not in favor of the town getting into the commercial real estate business and spoke against it publicly. The town assured everyone that it will be a great benefit to the residents. The only results I have seen so far is that a building sits empty that the taxpayer has to maintain and there are no property taxes or economic activity being generated from the property. So I ask “where is the benefit”? I also wonder why the town had contracted with UNC for economic development as I was under the impression that the town already has an economic development director. This is a situation that

Just a little history: Heritage, Damerons ask for more water in 2004

(This news article from the August 4, 2004 edition of The Wake Forest Gazette will help people understand the background of the information about Friendship Chapel Road and the extension of Franklin Street in The Growth Rate in this edition. (The town restricted builders to 50 single-family house permits per year to conserve its available water which was the Wake Forest Reservoir supplemented by water bought from Raleigh. That plan was in effect from 2001 through mid-2005 when the town and Raleigh reached an agreement under which the city purchased the Wake Forest water and sewer systems, water plant and reservoir. The town had to pay for a number of improvements and did so by the difference between the higher town water/sewer rates and those in Raleigh. All Wake Forest water/sewer customers now pay the lower Raleigh rates though those have risen through the years.) * * * * The
