Saturday, June 1, with a family-friendly 5K walk/run from 8 to 9 a.m., followed by free activities from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., including an Environmental Education Expo, health and fitness activities and much more. Check-in for the 5K walk/run begins at 7 a.m., and the start time is 8 a.m. Online registration continues at http://bit.ly/wfnationaltrailsday. The entry fee is $35, and same-day registrations will be accepted. A loop of the paved trails throughout Joyner Park will comprise the 3.1-mile course. The course map is provided online. Mier first-place overall winner at Lineman’s Rodeo

Wake Forest Power Lineman Hugo Mier was the first-place overall winner at the 2019 NC Association of Municipal Electric Systems Lineman’s Rodeo held May 16 in Fayetteville. Mier, along with Wake Forest Power lineman Joe Shearin competed against over 25 other linemen in the Journeyman division, while Tripp Jefferys, Lonnie Wilson and Jason Walters participated in the Apprentice division. A qualified Journeyman has more than five years of experience in line work, while a qualified Apprentice has less than five years of line work experience. The Lineman’s Rodeo is an opportunity for public power linemen throughout North Carolina to put their skills to the test and compete against their peers in several job-related categories. Each contestant is scored on safety procedures, work practices, equipment handling, neatness and timely completion of the event. Town and Kimo Mountain win Gold Telly

The Town of Wake Forest and Kino Mountain Productions are 2019 Telly Award-winners. The 40th Annual Telly Awards recognized Wake Forest and Kino Mountain as Gold winners in the category of Non-Broadcast-General Documentary for their video about “The Wall That Heals” sojourn in Wake Forest in October 2018. The two-and-a-half-minute video, which features powerful scenes of The Wall’s four-day stay at E. Carroll Joyner Park including touching interviews with visitors, was produced though a collaborative effort between the Town and Kino Mountain, a full-service video production and creative services company. Father, son to be honored at Monday’s flag-raising

At 11 a.m. on Monday, June 3, the 33nd Wake Forest Memorial Flag-Raising Ceremony will honor a father, Wallace Denton, who served in the U.S. Army, and his son, Everette Reid Denton, who served in the U.S. Navy. The ceremony will take place in Centennial Plaza in front of the Wake Forest Town Hall at 301 South Brooks Street. Members of the Denton family will participate in the ceremony, which will include patriotic songs, special remarks, a memorial wreath laying and the ceremonial flag-raising. After raising the American flag, the Wake Forest Fire Department Honor Guard will raise the U.S. Army service flag, followed by the U.S. Marine Corps service flag, in recognition of the military branches in which both Dentons served. Family Fitness Fair at Joyner on June 8

A free Family Fitness Fair featuring Zumba, Yoga, cooking demonstrations and fitness classes will be held Saturday, June 8, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in E. Carroll Joyner Park on Harris Road. It is sponsored by the Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department in conjunction with the National Recreation and Park Association’s “Family Health & Fitness Day” initiative celebrated every year on the second Saturday in June. Participating local businesses and organizations will include UNC Rex Healthcare, Isagenix, Red Dog CrossFit, Wake Forest Ninja Academy, Dr. Dnice, Go Ape, Nutrishop Wake Forest, The Blood Connection, Camp Gladiator, Vision Martial Arts, Juice Plus, British Swim School, Marbles Kids Museum, Wells Family Dental Group, Oberweiss and Pendergrass Academy. Wake Forest residents have until Sunday, June 2, to share their thoughts and opinions on the draft recommendations presented during the May 16 Comprehensive Transportation Plan public information meeting at the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre. Proposals were presented on roadways and roadway sections, bicycle and pedestrian networks, mass transit and several hotspot intersections, including Forestville Road and Heritage Lake Road at Rogers Road, South Main Street at Rogers Road, and South Main Street at NC 98 Bypass – just to name a few. Draft recommendation maps, diagrams and other visuals displayed during the May 16 meeting are available online. Dementia caregiver workshop on June 5

The Wake Forest Renaissance Centre at 405 South Brooks Street will host an encore Caregiver Workshop entitled “Identifying the Enemy” Wednesday, June 5, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Caregivers can get so caught up in the details of caregiving that they become overwhelmed with stress, guilt and worry. The June 5 presentation examines these feelings and discusses ways to respond appropriately to them, while attempting to chart a healthier and gentler dementia journey for both patient and caregiver. The Town of Wake Forest is stepping up its efforts to educate sanitation customers about trash and recycling collection guidelines. Over the next several weeks, the own will use an array of communications methods, including social media, email and direct mail, to inform residents concerning sanitation do’s and don’ts. The community outreach effort will precede a new initiative targeting sanitation collection violators. Starting Aug. 1, town and Republic Services crews will begin tagging residents that violate collection guidelines.
