The used coat and jacket drive sponsored by the Wake Forest Youth in Government Advisory Board will continue through May 17. Instructors, program ideas needed at Joyner Park

The Wake Forest Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department is recruiting instructors and soliciting youth and adult course/program ideas for fall 2019 at the Joyner Park Community Center. Now under construction, the 32,000-square-foot community center is expected to be completed this summer. Designed to blend in with current Joyner Park structures and the natural habitat, the new facility will feature a walking track, gymnasium for basketball, volleyball and pickleball, multi-purpose rooms, dance studio and kitchen. The parks and rec department is especially in need of the following program instructors: preschool dance, preschool sports fundamentals, youth/adult fitness, preschool music and culinary arts. However, other program ideas will be considered. The department offers an array of year-round recreation classes and activities. May is WF Month of Fitness

The Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources (PRCR) Department will offer a free fitness series in May. Free and open to area residents of all ages, May Month of Fitness will offer the following classes throughout May: Camp Gladiator on Mondays, Yoga on Tuesdays and Zumba on Wednesdays – except May 22. Each class will be offered on their respective nights from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at E. Carroll Joyner Park on Harris Road. All classes are free and require no registration. Free bike safety fair May 4

May is Bike Safety Month and the Town of Wake Forest is helping to raise awareness about the importance of safe bicycle use by sponsoring a free Bicycle Safety Fair on Saturday, May 4. The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will take place in Town Hall’s Brooks Street parking lot at 301 South Brooks Street. This year’s safety fair will be offered as part of the 39th annual Meet in the Street. Plus, in honor of Star Wars Day on May 4, every participant who comes dressed in costume as a Star Wars character will be entered in a drawing for a Star Wars prize pack. 70 new homes permitted in March

The Wake Forest Inspections Department issued 70 permits for new homes in March, 46 for single-family homes and 24 for townhouses. There was also a permit issued for a new commercial building in the Shoppes at Heritage Village shopping center at the corner of Rogers and Forestville roads. The builder will be the Jacobs Group, which paid $12,435.32 in fees for a 4,280-square-foot building with an estimated improvement value of one million. The department listed one new business, Heartland Dental at 1070 Forestville Road, the Shoppes at Heritage Village shopping center. Inspectors also worked on fit-ups and pre-occupancy permits. Six fit-ups were completed for a church, Familia Nueve Vida, in Suite 102 at 203 Capcom Avenue; the Perry Brandt law office at 417 South Main Street; Under the Table, a custom furniture store at 417 B South Brooks Street; Rookies Restaurant at 11200 Capital Boulevard, the Wake Pointe Shopping center;

Field of Dreams comes true on May 8

On Wednesday, May 8, the North Wake Baseball Complex at The Factory will host the 11th annual Field of Dreams from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., occupying all the ball fields. A lively cemetery tour planned for May 11

The Wake Forest Cemetery Advisory Board will sponsor its annual historic walking tour at the Wake Forest Cemetery on Saturday, May 11, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cemetery is located at 400 North White Street. Free and open to the public, the self-guided tour will celebrate the lives of the men and women who established the Wake Forest community, as well as its culture and destiny. Docents will be stationed at various locations throughout the cemetery to share interesting stories about specific gravesites, as well as photographs of loved ones bearing their ancestral names. Mad Hatter’s Tea Party set for May 11

One of the highlights of the spring season in Wake Forest is the Wake Forest Garden Club’s annual Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and Garden and Art Tour in the Wake Forest Historical Museum, on its grounds and in local gardens. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, May 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the high tea, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the garden and art tour. You can buy tickets for both or for just one. Transportation Plan aired May 16

The Town of Wake Forest will host a Comprehensive Transportation Plan public information meeting on Thursday, May 16, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre, 405 South Brooks Street. The meeting will have an informal, open house-style format, so there will not be a formal presentation. Attendees may arrive any time between 4 and 7 p.m. to share comments and ask questions. During the session, organizers will review ideas and opinions shared during the first CTP public meeting on topics such as safety, intersections, roadway congestion, technology, driving, walking, biking and transit. Light refreshments, along with soft drinks and water, will be available. Community input is the cornerstone of the Comprehensive Transportation Plan, which will address all modes of transportation, including driving, walking, biking and transit. WFPD hosts recruitment fair

The Wake Forest Police Department will host a Recruitment Fair for sworn law enforcement officers and NC Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) graduates Friday, May 17, from 4 to 7 p.m. The event will take place both inside and outside the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre, 405 S. Brooks St. Designed to highlight the benefits of working for the Town of Wake Forest and specifically with the Wake Forest Police Department (WFPD), the occasion will include vehicle and equipment displays and provide information about job opportunities and career development. The recruitment fair will also offer attendees the opportunity to interact with members of the WFPD and the Town’s Human Resources Department.
